Communication & Brand Writer, Seattle

At Stripe, our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet. We believe that building a business online is a problem rooted in code and design, not finance. To break down those barriers and make economic opportunities available to anyone, anywhere, we’re designing the future of tools and infrastructure for starting, running, and scaling a business on the internet. That’s why we’re looking for our first (!) Communication & Brand Writer in Seattle to make the world of technology, finance, and business sound more accessible—without diluting it or dumbing it down.

The Writing team (part of our Design group) works across many projects at Stripe—from our brand voice to websites and events. Put simply, you will be tasked with guiding entrepreneurial minds toward their ambitions. Are writers in a position to help with something like that? We’re glad you asked. Some (or at least one) of us refer to writing as “a center of gravity” at Stripe. Others (or at least another) assert that “Stripe is a celebration of the written word which happens to be incorporated in the state of Delaware.” And all of us believe that access to information pushes economies forward; our writing strives to be a well-crafted propellant.

As a Writer focused on Communication & Brand projects…

You will do all sorts of things, including:

  • Work with Design (a cohort of visual designers, researchers, and UX writers), Product Marketing, Brand Marketing, Sales, and executive teams to craft the words that define the benefits, features, and value of Stripe to multiple audiences.
  • Clearly communicate complex product features and benefits by taking a user-friendly and global approach.
  • Structure and write content for product and launch materials—websites, blog posts, white papers, presentations, films, and everything in-between.
  • Work on product and feature naming, product education, and narrative development.
  • Develop content strategies and copywriting for non-product-related initiatives, including efforts targeted at specific audiences or brand positions.
  • Contribute to and implement style guides and shared nomenclature across Stripe.
  • Help your colleagues at Stripe write more and better by providing tips, feedback, and playbooks.

You may be a fit for this role if you:

  • Can embrace the technical nature of Stripe and our products, and not attempt to unduly consumerize the enterprise.
  • Are relentlessly user-focused, and comfortable communicating with technically minded audiences.
  • Can achieve the right balance between interesting and approachable prose that doesn’t devolve into nonsensical, airport-poster sloganeering.
  • Can edit existing writing or create from scratch with input from multiple stakeholders.
  • Are confident in your point of view, but willing to adjust based on input from others.
  • Can understand the Stripe tone of voice and help us augment it.
  • Can write long- and short-form copy.
  • Can work in a company full of writers where nobody “owns” writing.
  • Are flexible and have a keen eye for detail in your work.

You should include these in your application:

  • A link to your online portfolio.
  • Your CV or LinkedIn profile.
  • A few words about why Stripe is interesting to you
