What We Are Looking For In This Role
As a Senior Content Manager for Leafly’s Content Department, you will be responsible for guiding the direction of Leafly’s informational content and resources. With consideration of cannabis novices, enthusiasts, medical marijuana patients, and everyone in between, you’ll develop data-driven strategies that maintain Leafly’s reputation as the world’s cannabis information hub.
We’re looking for an experienced content expert with a sharp eye for stories, an in-depth understanding of content strategy, and strong editing skills. Applicants should be self-starters capable of shining in a leadership role, yet unafraid to get their hands dirty and pitch in wherever needed. Successful candidates will also have an affinity for telling fresh, engaging stories in bold new ways; possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills; bring an unmatched work ethic to the table; and have a vision for driving Leafly content forward in a way that aligns with the company’s overall vision and roadmap. Some of your day-to-day responsibilities will be:

  • Work with the Director of Content and editorial leads to create world-class content for Leafly
  • Lead the editorial execution of all informational stories, features, and content partnerships, make data-driven changes, and manage multiple projects at once
  • Grow the Leafly audience with content that appeals to and expands our audience, focusing on key markets while driving steady increases in traffic, engagement, and returning visitors
  • Manage and grow the information content team, including three or more direct reports and numerous freelancers
  • Leverage the information budget to support team goals; maximize resources by prioritizing projects and making smart strategic decisions
  • Meet with the Director of Content, editorial leads, and the broader content team to make informational stories an integral part of Leafly’s content strategy
  • Develop data-driven strategies that inform editorial direction of Leafly’s informational content
  • Work with direct reports and freelancers to develop fresh, bold lifestyle stories and series that seamlessly fit Leafly’s voice and brand guidelines
  • Conceptualize, assign, edit, build, and publish informational articles that touch upon cannabis 101, advanced cannabis topics, strains & products, health, and science & tech
  • Work with SEO, data, media, marketing, sales, and product teams to evolve Leafly’s informational content and maximize its impact
  • Leverage data and analytics to refine content creation processes, and help your team hone their writing, editing, and storytelling skills
  • This is a position for a hardworking, self-starting, meticulously organized candidate who thrives in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications

  • At least seven years’ experience working in content creation and editing, preferably at a digital publication, magazine, or media outlet
  • At least two years’ experience managing direct reports 
  • Experience working to turn educational resources into high-value, engaging content across various categories
  • Experience with digital media and storytelling across a variety of multimedia (written, interactive, video, podcast, infographic, quiz/poll, etc.)
  • Persistent drive to create engaging, creative content that educates, informs, and entertains in a brand-forward yet trustworthy manner
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms/copy and SEO best practices
  • Demonstration of exceptional written and verbal communication skills and complete command of AP style
  • Ride or die for the Oxford comma
  • A degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or other relevant area of study is recommended
  • Experience with WordPress or a similar CMS
  • Expertise of Microsoft Office, knowledge of Google suite, and willingness to work closely with tech teams via communication tools such as Trello and Slack
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain poise under stress and to respond to requests quickly and logically
  • Able to interpret and convey data and repackage in meaningful, easy-to-understand ways
  • Knowledge of cannabis strains and products/familiarity with cannabis is a plus
