Join Unity’s global Documentation team and help us take our award-winning docs to the next level for millions of Unity users worldwide. We’re looking for an experienced Technical Writer with passion and drive, a technical aptitude, and excellent writing and editing skills.

The 2 main requirements are:
1. Passion for writing, language and communication – you think about putting the right words in the right order
2. You understand technology and have a natural affinity for IT – you enjoy taking things apart or finding out how they work
3. A talent for simplifying complexity – you take pride in helping others understand difficult subjects and learn new skills

(Attention to detail is also important – if you’ve not spotted the error above, have another read...)

We’re looking for someone who can hit the ground running, quickly form good working relationships with developers across the globe, and work collaboratively to produce great documentation that simplifies, explains and empowers users to get the most from Unity products. This will likely include a mix of writing from scratch, revising draft documents supplied by developers, and overhauling legacy content.

As part of Unity’s Engineering division, our growing Docs team works with colleagues across the world, from development teams through to Support, Community, QA, Marketing, and User Experience. You’ll join a talented, dynamic team of Technical Writers, Content Managers and Information Architects working across countries and time zones to support a passionate, growing community of Developers and Artists (around 1M Docs visitors per month).

Responsibilities

  • Writing, updating and maintaining User Manual and Scripting API content
  • Using a custom-built content management system to write, manage and publish modularized content
  • Planning, scheduling and delivering technical documentation to support software releases
  • Gathering, editing and publishing subject-specific knowledge
  • Reviewing, editing and proofreading content for quality assurance and mentoring
  • Collaborating with internal subject matter experts across multiple locations and time zones
  • Using internal templates, standards and our in-house style guide (based on the Microsoft Writing Style Guide) to develop clear, reusable content
  • Thinking about the best way to improve the docs user experience and making a strong contribution to team projects and events
  • Championing the role and importance of documentation within the organization and community

Requirements

  • 3+ years experience as a Technical Writer, Content Manager or similar
  • Strong affinity for writing and technology
  • Excellent computing skills, ideally with an understanding of programming
  • Very high standard of written and spoken English
  • Ability to deliver results under tight deadlines
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Capable of being diplomatic but persistent in pursuit of goals
  • Structured and autonomous approach to working
  • Willingness to learn and high degree of initiative
  • Confident to give and receive detailed and challenging feedback

Bonus Points

  • Passion for games and any experience of Unity or 3D game development
  • Knowledge or experience of programming languages, especially C#
  • Experience producing documentation using HTML/CSS or Markdown
  • Understanding of source control tools (e.g. github, Mercurial) and techniques
  • Any Slack, Twitter, forum, or community management skills
  • Comfortable presenting or mentoring developers and other writers
  • Any technical development skills or experience worth highlighting

There is no set path to becoming a good technical author, which is why we’re less concerned about specific university degrees or experience – if you meet the above requirements, then anything you need to know we can teach you. And if you bring considerable skills and experience then we’re happy to learn from you too.
Some travel will be required between Unity offices around the world (San Francisco, Brighton, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Asia) and to some major industry events.
