About the Role:

OfferUp is looking for a Business Intelligence Engineer II to join our Data Warehouse team. We seek to delight our users with the safest, simplest and most effective local marketplace app on the planet. Your role as a Business Intelligence Engineer II will be to help OfferUp use the most cutting edge data technology to maintain its market lead in customer trust and product enthusiasm.

In this role, you will be expected to understand the business and implement data pipelines and BI solutions (databases, queries, views, reports, and dashboards); from our warehouse and data stores to best in class data models that drive analytics and reporting across our business. Within our data family, we work closely with our own Data Science team to prepare and deploy data for model construction - models that are industry-leading - key drivers for understanding our business and making decisions across our marketplace!

You must be a highly motivated person with a history of success working closely with business partners to define and implement analytics features that can be tracked to monitor product enhancement success and impact on the bottom line. 

Here’s more of what you will get to do:

  • Work closely with Business Operations and Data Science teams to define requirements for reporting and data science modeling
  • Understand basic data science concepts and build simple data science models
  • Build and operate large scale data infrastructure in production
  • Design, implement and debug data transformations, models and dashboards
  • Think through long-term impacts of key design decisions and handling failure scenarios.
  • Mentor other data engineers and analysts to help them with their growth
  • Define data engineering best practices, set standards and lead projects which may require cross-team collaboration
  • Contribute at a senior level to the data warehouse design and data preparation by implementing a robust and extensible design
  • Design and develop applications to process large amounts of critical information in batch and near real-time/real-time to power user-facing features
  • Influence technical direction for the company, leveraging your prior experiences and helping evaluate emerging technologies and approaches

You’ll thrive in this role if you have: (All OfferUp employees are required to receive Covid-19 vaccinations unless an employee is in need of an exemption from this policy due to a medical reason, or because of a sincerely held religious belief.)

  • 6 months+  of SQL and data modeling.
  • 6 months+  experience building with data reporting tools (Looker, Tableau, Mode or Periscope).
  • 6 months+  Git/BitBucket or similar version control systems.
  • Strong understanding of using distributed systems for processing data.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Basic proficiency in Java, Spark, or Python.

Helpful, but not required: 

  • 6+ months of professional software development experience.
  • Understanding of open-source data infrastructure projects, such as Apache Spark, Airflow.
  • Understanding of building software in AWS/GCP or similar cloud environments.
  • Understanding or experience with AWS/GCP services like EMR, Kinesis, Firehose, Lambda, Sagemaker, Athena, Firebase, BigQuery, GoogleStorage is a big plus.
  • Computer Science or Engineering degree required, Masters degree preferred
