Discovery - Associate Director, Data Science (Experimentation)

Chewy is seeking an Associate Director Data Science - Discovery for our Discovery Labs team in Bellevue, WA. In this position, you will help us build scalable, robust data solutions for Discovery at Chewy. We use best of machine learning techniques and continuously test the outcomes to simplify product discovery for pet parents looking for their pet needs on Chewy.com. Our exceptional multi-disciplinary team of data scientists, data engineers, software engineers and product managers work together to power personalized recommendations and product discovery for pet parents. Our team has single threaded ownership of the space allowing us to decide impactful products that we can experiment, measure with metrics, and deliver at a fast pace.
What You'll Do:
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners across businesses to build and execute on the strategic projects and tech roadmap for your functional area.
- Help the business teams in scaling the business to 5x current volume, using technology and build capabilities to run scalable experiments at 5X volume
- Work in conjunction with the Business VPs to develop the goals for the team
- Build analytics frameworks and models that help develop and execute overall product recommendations and experimentation strategy to enhance experimentation accuracy
- Work with colleagues in data science and engineering to drive best practices in development, adapting emerging and relevant approaches, testing, and production deployment at scale in Personalization space.
- Establish strong working relationships at all organizational levels across different functional teams.
- Hire, develop and lead a team of data scientists and data engineers through complex, cross-functional initiatives
- Identify and manage team priorities that align with Chewy’s overall objectives
- Lead from the front and not be afraid of rolling-up your sleeves regularly, in supporting the team
What You'll Need:
- MS or PhD in a quantitative/engineering field.
- Experience in experimentation measurement, bias reduction, and causal inferences in an industry setting, preferably on ecommerce background
- Demonstrated history of leadership and full-cycle ownership of high impact data science and engineering projects, from model conceptualization to iterative implementation.
- 8+ years of experience in data science role with 5+ years in managing and mentoring data science and technical teams.
- Proven experience with bringing structured thinking in ambiguous problems spaces and delivering solutions.
- Proficient Analytical tool kit- SQL, Python or R, Tableau etc and any other analytics tool are preferred Track record of taking ownership and having the ability to think and react in a high-energy, data-driven, fast-paced environment
- Ability to coach junior members through the whole data science lifecycle
- Demonstrated business impact by connecting multiple teams in an organization
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to explain details of complex concepts to non-expert stakeholders in a simple and understandable way
- Position may require occasional travel
Bonus:
- Product Management experience
- Experience with Amazon Web Services tools such as Redshift, Snowflake, SageMaker or other similar platforms
- Experience in R, PySpark, Spark, Scala, Java, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Docker
- Experience in object-oriented programming with Python
Compensation & Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $124,500-$255,000. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant.

Non-exempt hourly team members accrue paid time off (PTO) while salaried-exempt team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Non-exempt hourly team members in Fulfillment Centers and Customer Service are also eligible for additional unplanned unpaid time off (UTO). Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
