Job Summary:  Metropolitan Market and its four preeminent sister banners are looking for a bright and highly motivated individual to join our organization as a Senior Analyst on the Competitive Intelligence team.

As a key team member within our Merchandising Analytics & Consumer Insights organization, you will be responsible for the management, analysis, and delivery of competitive insights for our key stakeholders. You will remain apprised of industry news and support the development of our strategic playbooks and go-to-market strategies gleaning learnings from our competition and its application to our banners. You will play a critical role in developing the next generation of analytics and decision sciences that elevates our understanding of grocery retail and delivers meaningful value to our customers employing a consumer-centric mindset.                      

A successful candidate demonstrates a blend of retail experience, intermediate programming skills, advanced analytical prowess, and unmitigated curiosity to deliver insightful and actionable recommendations to our stakeholders. The ideal candidate possesses a “think big” and “create advocates” attitude with a successful track record of raising the bar and delivering above expectations. Strong communication, influential, and interpersonal skills are required as this role will interface across multiple banner teams and stakeholders.

Specific Job Duties:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Applies data mining skills with SQL, R, and/or Python to story tell data findings from internal and external data sourced from third party vendors, syndicated data providers, primary and secondary research, investor relations, and industry news.
  • Builds scalable and actionable reporting leveraging visualization tools, e.g. Tableau, that synthesize and provide timely and effective learnings to our business partners.
  • Proactively measures and analyzes our competitor’s playbook and go-to-market strategies including, but not limited to, an understanding of their marketing, loyalty, ecommerce, real estate, price, promotion, and assortment strategies.
  • Conducts competitor onsite visits and detail your findings and recommendations in a report for your stakeholders; travel may be required.
  • Participates in the Category Management Review process as part of the Merchandising Analytics organization.
  • Remains apprised of industry news, technology advances, investor relations, and competitive changes to inform our stakeholders of relevant and impactful risks and opportunities.
  • Lead in educating stakeholders on your findings and recommendations to shape the banner playbook and go-to-market strategies.
  • Completes other projects and responsibilities as assigned by the Merchandising Analytics and Consumer Insights leader.                                                                                               

Skills Required / Qualifications:

Candidates will be selected from applicants having the best combination of the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Statistic, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience working in retail, with a strong preference for grocery retail or CPG experience.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in Data Science, Business or Merchandising Analytics, Business Intelligence, or comparable research role, including use of business intelligence tools, e.g., Tableau.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience with SQL and relational databases, e.g. Redshift, with ability to write complex and highly-optimized queries.
  • Proven ability to present to diverse audiences with an emphasis in data storytelling and inciting action across the organization. 
  • Demonstrated success contributing to a positive work environment with a high level of professional maturity.
  • Independently able to drive a business and thrive in a fast paced, ever changing environment.
  • Ability to travel 10% of time.
  • Requires travel to regional retail support offices in Seattle, WA, Carson, CA, Portland, OR as needed.
