About the role:
Engages with stakeholders across teams to lead the design, development, optimization, and productization of machine learning (ML) or ML-based solutions and systems that are used to solve highly complex or vaguely defined problems. This role also leads efforts across teams to leverage and improve ML infrastructure for model development, training, deployment needs and scaling ML systems.
About the Team:
Uber started the Ads business a couple of years ago. In the short time, Ads has grown into a meaningful part of the company's growth and profitability strategy. The team responsibilities include improving the core engine of its product. This includes Ad auction, relevance, budget pacing and targeting. To add, we make continuous improvements by ensuring that the platform is scalable and reliable. The team ensures they meet the strict latency requirements. There is outstanding work happening everyday, with this platform being in its early stages of growth, there are opportunities to make an outsized impact on the evolution of Ads product.
Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or related field AND 2-years full-time Software Engineering work experience OR 5-years full-time Software Engineering work experience, WHICH INCLUDES 3-years total technical software engineering experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Programming language (e.g. C, C++, Java, Python, or Go)
  • Large-scale training using data structures and algorithms
  • Modern machine learning algorithms (e.g., tree-based techniques, supervised, deep, or probabilistic learning)
  • Machine Learning Software such as Tensorflow/Pytorch, Caffe, Scikit-Learn, or Spark MLLib
  • Note the 3-years total of specialized software engineering experience may have been gained through education and full-time work experience, additional training, coursework, research, or similar (OR some combination of these). The years of specialized experience are not necessarily in addition to the years of Education & full-time work experience indicated.

Technical skills:
Required:

  • Technical strength with 7+ years of experience developing and shipping code for production systems
  • 4+ years of experience in ads relevance specifically in the areas of candidate retrieval, ranking and relevance model optimization.
  • Experience with scalable ML architecture, feature engineering and management
  • Proven examples of project leadership roles, delivering production-level features from inception, and promoting a high-quality culture among the team
  • Experience working with large scale distributed systems meeting latency constraints, strict resilience and scale expectations.
  • Demonstrated experience easily speaking to the operational aspects of monitoring and alerting.
  • Programming language (e.g. C, C++, Java, Python, or Go)

  • Scale and optimize ads serving to unlock value for consumers, merchants and Uber.
  • Provide technical leadership, and drive technical direction for the ads relevance
  • Partner with other engineering teams, product owners, data scientists and stakeholders to build solutions
  • Work on exploring opportunities and implementing enhancements to improve relevance of ads for consumers
