CONSTELLATION OPERATIONS AND AUTOMATION ENGINEER

Work on a small team of satellite fleet engineers with a focus on autonomy and rapid iteration as the SpaceX Starlink constellation grows from tens to thousands of satellites and provides global internet access. Develop simulations, create and configure software to support this goal. Support anomaly resolution with goal of identifying the hardware or software improvements necessary to minimize manual fleet operations overhead.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Determine and develop capabilities for both flight and ground systems that will be required to successfully operate many satellites at once
  • Interface with software, GNC, propulsion, avionics, thermal, structure, ground station, and antenna teams to ensure they have the tools required to participate in the operation of the satellite
  • Support tool development for constellation operations
  • Manage autonomous collision avoidance process and tool development, including engagement of development of trajectory database for predicting future state of satellites
  • Support development of constellation simulation for determining the optimal method to operate the constellation
  • Continued support of satellites currently in orbit, including commanding, and anomaly resolution

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or physics

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in physics or an engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of experience in a space mission design or operations role
  • General familiarity with the disciplines necessary for spacecraft flight including: Structures, Propulsion, Avionics, GNC, Flight Software, Dynamics, Launch and Mission Operations, and Integration. Practical experience in real world development of these systems is highly desired
  • Strong understanding of orbital mechanics, modeling and simulation, and software development (Python and C++, specifically)
  • Multi-satellite LEO constellation operations experience
  • Capable of identifying and solving complex problems with little to no supervision or direction
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere

  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
