Lyft's engineering team is growing rapidly, and we are looking for Engineering Managers to help us scale. Our engineers are smart, flexible, and love solving difficult challenges. They look to their managers for organizational transparency, career development, mentorship, and honest feedback. They move fast and ship code to production continuously, relying on their leadership to increase productivity by removing obstacles and keeping processes lean. Our Engineering Managers are people with varying technical backgrounds and interests -- some are involved in the technical details of their team and others provide general technical direction and oversight. As managers, our job is to keep teams efficient and executing on the right goals. We build teams that are open, inclusive, diverse, helpful, and have a strong sense of ownership for the things they build.

Lyft’s Marketplace teams are responsible for creating and maintaining the foundational systems found at the center of Lyft’s marketplace. The platforms we build, operationalize, and optimize are responsible for ensuring that we pair drivers and passengers optimally (though Shared Rides, queued rides, and countless other levers), maximizing the utility of the network and significantly influencing the experience for both sides of the Lyft marketplace. The Marketplace Health team specifically builds platforms and products alike that have outsized impact in accelerating internal productivity of engineers and scientists at Lyft, and by extension addresses some of our most challenging problems in distributed systems, product optimization and ML as well. We help craft roadmaps, push forward our experimentation/data-driven culture, power intricate simulations at scale, and enable introspection of complex system decision making to keep iteration speed high.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a rapidly growing team of engineers (currently 7) developing infrastructure and product for Marketplace Health.
  • Manage the build-out and maintenance of extensible simulations for offline consideration of new products and configurations.
  • Build and maintain latency-sensitive, schema-centric APIs representing marketplace service decision making.
  • Challenge existing product assumptions to rapidly experiment with internal tools
  • Deploy in production and build scalable distributed systems, with micro-services framework and devops managed systems

 Experience & Skills:

  • Bachelors, Masters in Computer Science or at least 7 years of industry experience building and shipping software
  • Experience with leading software engineering teams through tough problems, growing people and shipping software
  • Expertise in at least one object oriented programming language
  • Experience with large-scale distributed storage and database systems
  • Proficiency in algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software design
  • Ability to decompose complex business problems and lead a team in solving them in a fast-paced but also rigorous fashion
  • Excellent communication skills

Nice To Have:

  • Geospatial - Familiarity with geospatial datasets and services, such as maps, local search, points of interest and business listings data, mobile device location and GPS traces
  • Core Infrastructure - Experience with development large scalable distributed systems
  • Familiarity with service oriented architecture
  • Machine Learning - experience building, training and deploying models that drive business value
  • Data Visualization / Data Exploration - experience building and engaging with tools that can help unpack system-level decision making.
