About the Company

Hazel Analytics pairs the largest food safety inspection database with powerful analytics tools and solutions for Fortune 500s and leading organizations in the restaurant, government, and financial services industries. Our Food Safety Insights (FSI) platform and other analytics products transform local health department data into actionable intelligence, leading to real impacts on consumer health.

Half of the 100 largest food retail chains use Hazel Analytics technology; our customers include notable national and global brands such as Amazon, Cheesecake Factory, Target, Starbucks, Uber Eats, and Yelp. Our recent awards include the 2019 Food Marketing Institute Food Safety Innovation Award and the 2019 Sani Professional Food Safety Program Innovation Award. Moreover, we're honored to have been recognized by Built in Seattle — two years in a row — as one of Seattle's best small businesses to work for.

About the role

As a technical product manager at Hazel, you'll provide comprehensive oversight for the engineering work behind our data collection and export capabilities, which lie at the heart of our product offerings. This role blends people skills, project management, technical knowledge, and big-picture thinking, situating you at a crucial nexus of Hazel's work. You'll be expected to contribute to strategic conversations about our technical and business roadmaps, support our tactical goals for hiring and project deliverables, and roll up your sleeves for day-to-day involvement in technical matters and engineer support. In addition to guiding the delivery of technical projects (on both short- and long-term timescales) and addressing risks to product performance and success, you will also serve as a central resource for a team of 4 to 6 software engineers and collaborate on promoting standards of operational excellence.

Compensation for this role is $130K - $150K (DOE), plus equity, annual bonuses, and a generous benefits package including medical/dental/vision and parental leave. We also support perks such as partial time-off for election days and qualifying volunteer opportunities.

Although we're currently working remotely, we do plan to adopt a hybrid model (2+ days in office) once the public health situation makes it feasible; therefore, we require a Seattle-area presence and do not have long-term fully-remote opportunities at this time. We are not able to provide H1B sponsorship; relocation assistance within the United States is negotiable.

Qualifications

  • Prior career experience as a technical product manager, program manager, engineering lead, or comparable role
  • Prior career experience in a software development/engineering role
  • Proven skillsets for project management and product planning
  • Familiarity with issue tracking and project management tools (esp. GitLab or GitHub for issue tracking)
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

  • [optional] Prior work in a growth-oriented startup, studio, or consultancy environment
  • [optional] Prior experience working with technical metrics for application performance
  • [optional] Prior experience contributing to high-level (medium- to long-term) roadmaps
  • [optional] Working knowledge of components in our technical stack, such as Python, PostgreSQL, or Google Cloud Platform

Responsibilities

  • Define, measure, respond to, and report on metrics for technical performance
  • Identify and research product improvement opportunities, balancing feature growth and long-term maintenance needs
  • Plan and coordinate engineering projects, in conjunction with stakeholders from other teams, delivering high-quality technical work while balancing timelines and team capacity
  • Contribute to company roadmap discussions by surfacing technical goals, metrics, needs/blockers, and constraints
  • Iteratively develop lightweight processes and standards in support of continuous operational improvement
  • Promote a team culture which values inclusivity, integrity, and technical excellence
  • Perform code reviews and contribute minor code changes opportunistically

Personal Traits

  • Self-motivated and proactive
  • Organized and able to multi-task
  • Capable of delivering difficult feedback in a constructive manner
  • Has business intuition needed to make decisions with incomplete data
  • Demonstrates a sense of ownership and accountability
