LEAD MAINTENANCE ENGINEER (STARLINK GATEWAY GROUND STATIONS)

SpaceX is building and deploying a worldwide fleet of gateway ground station antennas to support the SpaceX Starlink internet. Our maintenance engineers will own solving and responding to gateway ground station equipment issues on a daily basis in order to improve our asset availability and uptime. The Starlink gateway grounds stations are deployed around the world and make up the internet interfacing backbone of the Starlink network. Maintenance engineers will work closely with hardware responsible engineers and technician staff to quickly assess hardware failures, implement automated screening protocols, develop hardware failure fixes, and implement in field maintenance tasks. Maintenance engineering personnel will be expected to have a high degree of hardware familiarity and proficiency to perform risk analysis, map out the maintenance strategies and develop leading indicator monitoring systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead a team of engineers and technicians responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis and repairs of a global fleet of antenna assets to ensure Starlink network uptime requirements are met
  • Develop maintenance monitoring systems and software to track and troubleshoot antenna hardware performance Ability to analyze and review data to monitor system performance and triage issues accordingly
  • Setting-up and implementing maintenance policies and procedures as well as the co-ordination with external suppliers/contractors of maintenance services
  • Drive schedules for maintenance visits and work allocation
  • Perform onsite in field maintenance for complex failures and system outages
  • Perform site activation and end-to-end testing for new sites
  • Collaborate and advise design and manufacturing teams on optimal design for maintainability methodologies
  • Set up asset maintenance strategies using risk based and reliability centered maintenance methodologies
  • Maintain asset documentation and preventative maintenance plans
  • Identify and maintain critical spare strategy for worldwide fleet of antennas

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, aerospace, systems, or manufacturing engineering
  • 4+ years of experience handling maintenance planning and reliability assessment for a high volume product
  • 2+ years of experience working on mechanical/electrical maintenance engineering projects

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience managing a team
  • Antenna maintenance proficiency
  • Strong trouble shooting and problem solving skills
  • Good knowledge of RF test equipment
  • Knowledge of Linux
  • Knowledge of VSAT technology
  • Strong project management skills
  • Basic competency with SQL databases and reporting software (Tableau, Periscope, etc.)
  • Detail oriented, organized, and ability to demonstrate a high sense of urgency
  • Self-starter, able to identify areas for improvement with minimal direction
  • Strong analytical and written skills
  • Ability to handle multiple system issues in a fast-paced and dynamic team environment

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willing to travel 10-15% of the time, up to one week at a time
  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed
