At the center of our travel marketplace is the Search & Discovery organization. This team is currently building Search, Recommendations, and intent collection systems to power our iconic brands like Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, serving millions of requests every day. The systems we create are essential for our online marketplaces with high availability and performance requirements and drive substantial commercial value. They require crafting control loops through data, machine learning, and online serving systems to serve millions of travelers worldwide.

 

We are looking for a Principal Engineer who combines superb technical skills to craft innovative solutions with a passion for influencing and coaching other senior individual contributors. This person must be comfortable translating vague problems into pragmatic solutions that open up the boundaries of technical possibilities and inspire others to follow.

 

The person for this role is passionate about distributed systems, including caching, streaming, and indexing technologies on the cloud; is always looking to maintain higher standards for themselves as well as everyone in the team; and enjoys teaching others and scales themselves by bringing others along.

 

Above all, this role will have the opportunity to shape the future of travel search.

 

What you’ll do:

  • Architect and build next-generation travel search systems

  • Develop various sub-systems that set and raise the bar on quality, operability, and scalability

  • Curate, maintain and narrate end to end architecture of our systems, so everyone understands the technical direction

  • Set and maintain a bar on engineering and operational excellence, through guardrails, metrics, and practices

  • Be an authority, and lead the tech strategy and outcomes

  • Liaison with peer teams within and outside Search & Discovery to define technical interfaces for system dependencies

 

NOTE: As part of the interview process, in order to help us understand you better, you will be asked to present to an interview panel on a problem we give you.

 

Who you are:

  • Built and operated cloud-based highly available and scalable online serving or streaming, or machine learning-based systems utilizing large, diverse data sets in production for 7-10 years

  • Proficient in programming languages like Java, Scala, Kotlin, Python, etc.

  • Experienced in designing API for internal and external consumers, architecting, and operating scalable and elastic distributed systems

  • Coached, influenced, and inspired multiple teams to tackle technical problems

  • Championed code quality, automated testing, design reviews, and other engineering practices

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, related field, or equivalent practical experience
