As a Principal Front-End Software Engineer for our front-end web applications you will be part of a talented team of software engineers who will drive the next generation of architecture and implementation of our platform.  You are a specialist with a serious level of experience and skill in working with front-end technologies and proven ability to deliver code with high levels of speed and quality. You communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and are a technical leader through your guidance, collaboration and mentoring of engineering staff. You are passionate about technology and generate positive impact throughout the organization through your influence, drive and collaboration across departments.

Your job responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Drive the evolution of the front-end architecture and technology composition by working in collaboration with other Principal Engineers
  • Drive and deliver resolution of the most urgent and challenging technical issues
  • Identify and drive technical front-end initiatives that deliver positive impact for the business and the department
  • Mentor engineers through coaching, consultation and code review feedback
  • Drive improvements in the code base, best practices, design patterns and development tools
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners to understand business needs and provide solution options, costs and trade-offs
  • Technically lead front-end teams in maintaining and driving improvements to continually meet and beat the organization and the department’s key performance indicators
  • Stay current with industry advancements to pragmatically apply to the platform to achieve concrete results

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience developing large scale front-end web applications
  • Expert level proficiency in writing modular JavaScript in ES6 (and/or beyond) utilizing common JavaScript design patterns
  • Significant experience with JavaScript frameworks such as AngularJS, React and/or Vue
  • Advanced proficiency with web markup, HTML5 and CSS3
  • Excellent understanding and experience with technologies and tools such as XML, JSON, AJAX, Redux and Webpack
  • Ideally have solid experience with Ruby on Rails
  • Experience working with the AWS cloud platform
  • Fully proficient using version control systems such as Git
  • Strong problem solving, troubleshooting and performance tuning skills
  • Proven ability to drive impact and generate results
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills with ability to lead and influence
  • Passion for technology with demonstrated commitment to personal growth and continuous improvement
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent

Think React for front-end work, C# for back-end applications, Python for data, and above all else, the ability to find fun in your work. Vance achieved that last objective via the launch of the VisualGPS Insights tool. While the interactive tool helps Getty Images and iStock customers make smarter visual strategy decisions through data, it also resulted in Vance’s professional growth: “I’ve led and shaped this initiative from the designs all the way down to how the data is structured.”

Now, he gets to build machine-learning models and collaborate with linguists and data scientists to elevate the user search experience for Getty Images’ global customer base. “The goal is to have users type what they’re looking for exactly the way they’d describe it to a friend.” It’s been a “Goldilocks” opportunity: a big company with resources and structure, but a tight-knit team — and the technology arm of Getty Images as a critical pillar to the organization.

Shaping the industry through an impactful approach
Keeping “fairness” front of mind is inherent in Senior Data Scientist Wendy Ku’s work on Getty Images’ search team. “Our mission is to enable customers to find the visual that they want to license as easily and intuitively as possible, and we know that our search results must represent the make-up of society, and must do so fairly, in order to accomplish this mission,” Ku said. Accordingly, the team works to ensure multilingual and visual language models are informed by appropriate data so that harmful stereotypes or biases are not perpetuated when users make image queries.
