Job Description

The Principal Software Engineer II, reporting to the VP Enterprise Data & Science, is responsible for oversight of healthcare data & predictive analytics projects that power advanced healthcare use cases. The Engineer will work closely with internal line of business owners to build robust, reusable, and highly tuned machine learning models, experimentation, and rapid prototyping frameworks designed to encourage experimentation patterns by default. Additionally, they'll be responsible for building our experimentation framework capabilities from the ground up, and retrofitting it into a fully productionized distributed service-oriented architecture that powers our service today. This includes working in close partnership with internal and external partners to ensure the successful delivery of Accolade’s customer commitments by providing access to our data science capabilities and delivering those all the way to the end customer.

The ideal Engineer will be expected to learn the specifics of the healthcare industry, and grow into having a high level of understanding of health plans and health systems with the ability to analyze large healthcare data sets to identify opportunities to improve clinical operational performance, as well as health care utilization, cost and outcomes. 

A day in the life…

  • Plays an auxiliary role as a consultant to software developers company-wide who seek guidance and best practices. This includes active participation of architectural proposals, and design reviews for systems & components
  • Manages and executes entire projects or components of large projects from start to finish including data gathering and manipulation, synthesis and modeling, problem solving and communication of insights and recommendations
  • Work with our application engineering teams to deeply infuse the notion of using data science to amplify their ability to sense, predict, and recommend data & content to power state-of-the-art experiences and unparalleled insights into all aspects of our service, populations, customers, and partners
  • Build prototypes using best known methods and within our company’s modern engineering framework. Work effectively across all layers of the stack, from backends and data tiers to front-end and browser/mobile clients
  • Exceptional ability to identify quick solutions to problems to bias towards results and with eye toward the long run 
  • Always willing to roll up sleeves, learn, communicate, analyze, and drive initiatives forward
  • Effectively communicating findings and proposed recommendations from these analyses to relevant Sr/Executive Leadership

Qualifications

What we are looking for…

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Informatics, or related field; PhD is preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant prior work experience in a software development engineering role; at least 3 years of experience in building services that operate on large datasets. Previous experience with health care data sources such as claims, digital health solutions, electronic health records, clinical and patient reported data would be a plus
  • Knowledge of standard methods for conducting and analyzing experiments within a modern web/mobile platform
  • Excellent technical documentation written skills, with clear, concise, and logically organized documents that can explain complicated and complex topics with clarity and transparency.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills with attention to detail, data quality and scientific rigor
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
