Senior Software Engineer - Cloud Operations (AWS/Kubernetes)

| Seattle
Who we are:
Whether you need in-home dog boarding, pet sitting, dog walking, grooming or day care, Rover connects pet parents with dog people who’ll treat their pets like family. Rover sitters are your rainy-day-dog-walkers. Your every-day-belly-rubbers. Your tug-of-war players. Your middle-of-the-night-pee-breakers. Because we get it—your dog is family. And when you can’t be there, you can trust us to keep your dog happy, healthy, and sweet as ever.
But it’s not just about dog love. Rover is also an award-winning technology business committed to making pet care safe, easy, and affordable so that everyone can experience the unconditional love of a dog.
So for the frequent butt-sniffers, the sock-stealers, the table-side beggars and the clicker-trained champions: We’re your people. And for the world travelers, the long-day-at-work-ers, the business-trip jetsetters, the swing-shift survivors: We’re your people, too. Whatever you and your dog are into, we’re into it, too. And we’ve got your back. Anytime. Anywhere.
We're headquartered in downtown Seattle. We're an agile, fast-growing startup, and our leadership comes from some of the country's most respected tech companies. We've been named among Seattle's "Best Places to Work" in Seattle Met magazine, Seattle Business Magazine, and the Puget Sound Business Journal." We're also a recipient of Seattle Business Magazine's 2015 Tech Impact Awards and GeekWire’s 2019 Next Tech Titan Award. Needless to say (but we're going to say it anyway)—we love dogs, and we wouldn't dream of going to work without them by our sides.
Who we're looking for:
We're looking for an experienced software engineer for our cloud infrastructure team. This is a hands-on position in a cloud-native environment with the opportunity to be part of the team that owns and drives the adoption of service-oriented architecture at Rover to accelerate the delivery of software and infrastructure using technologies such as AWS and Kubernetes.

What does Infrastructure at Rover look like?
The infrastructure that powers Rover’s consumer facing web app runs in AWS. It is fully automated (IAC and CI/CD) with Kubernetes as its strategic platform. We release to production over thirty times per day. Rover’s data infrastructure has AWS Redshift as its centerpiece which together with a data lake supports various traditional and machine learning based applications. The IT environment uses very little on-premise hardware and leverages SaaS products whenever possible to support end user systems.
The teams of the Infrastructure organization are responsible for data, IT, machine learning and cloud at Rover. Most of our customers are engineers, but collaboration with teams outside of the Tech organization is common.

Your Qualifications:

  • You are a Software engineer who has deep experience designing, implementing and managing customer-facing web app infrastructure

  • We “own” AWS and manage most of our infrastructure. Some services and components are managed by our fellow infrastructure teams (the data infrastructure team, for example, manages RDS and Redshift, the IT team manages its own AWS accounts)
  • We are the experts on Kubernetes. We manage the clusters and deploy pipelines (also in collaboration with a fellow team) and support the dev teams on their journey to Kubernetes and service architectures (Rover’s webapp is running in Django).
  • We love automation.
  • We use hosted services where we can. Datadog and Loggly are just two examples.
  • We also love thoroughness, finishing what you started and working on the right things.
  • We have two engineers in Seattle and one in Barcelona, Spain, a dedicated Technical Product Manager and an Engineering Manager
  • We work closely with engineers on feature, platform and the other infrastructure teams and with people outside of Rover’s Tech organization.
