Job Description

What We Do: We are focused on enabling managers to have better conversations about pay, through enhancing and expanding a suite of applications and services used to power modern pay decisions for over 18 million employees. This includes our Gender Wage Gap Analysis Tool, Job Collaboration, and the rest of our Team products that help empower managers.

What You Do: As a member this team, you will work closely with product, design, and other full-stack engineers to build compelling, beautifully presented user experiences that support managers in all things compensation. You will help guide the front-end architecture and contribute to a front-end platform and services spanning multiple products and teams.

Day-in-the-Life: As a Software Engineer, a typical day may include the following…

  • Plenty of keyboard time working on front-end code and services.
  • Working in two-week Agile sprints.
  • Providing quality and thoughtful feedback on peer code reviews.

First Year in Role:

  • Month 3: Partnering with your teammates, you have completed a couple handfuls of bug fixes and feature changes. Your changes will be live in production making an impact on our business users and company metrics.
  • Month 6: At this point, you have completely ramped up on the team with the ability to pick up any task on the sprint board and complete it on your own from start to finish.
  • Month 12: You are fully integrated into the PayScale engineering organization and you are an authority in many of the projects, services, and processes that we own as a team.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 4+ years of software engineering experience.

Skills:

  • You have a solid grasp of Web Fundamentals.
  • You are experienced with HTML, JavaScript and CSS.
  • You have familiarity or experience with React and Redux or similar technologies.
  • You have previous experience with C# or other OOP languages.
  • You have familiarity/experience with unit testing and crafting testable code.
  • You can explain technical concepts to developers, project managers, and technical managers.
  • You have the ability and desire to work with a collaborative and supportive team of people solving complex problems.

Tools:

  • We write our front-end code using React, Redux, JavaScript, Sass.
  • We write all our back-end code in C# and node.js.
  • We work in Azure utilizing technologies such as Blob Storage, SQL and more.
  • We use TeamCity and Octopus for our build and deploy pipeline.
  • We track all our work in Jira and store all our git repositories in Bitbucket.

Additional Information

Meet Your Manager: Alex D'Angelo joined PayScale in 2011 as a full-stack developer, later transitioning to web architect, and then a dev manager on a consumer product. Alex now leads development on the business applications team in Seattle, working closely with the product team to ensure that the team delivers features at the highest quality.

Hiring Process: “Change is the only constant in life (and PayScale)” – Heraclites (okay, so we paraphrased a bit). The hiring process outlined below is a rough overview, and is subject to change based on business priority, interviewer availability, etc.

  1. Phone interview with Talent Acquisition (30 minutes)
  2. HackerRank coding challenge (up to 3 hours)
  3. Coffee with Hiring Manager (45 minutes)
  4. In-person interview with team (4-5 hours)
