Boeing Defense, Space and Security is seeking a Software Systems Engineer (Level 3 or Level 4) in the Puget Sound area to support multiple space programs. The position provides an opportunity work with an experienced, interdisciplinary team to develop unique systems to meet challenging requirements on dynamic development programs. This exciting position supports architecting and crafting modern cloud-based software for a next generation ground system! You will work with a highly dedicated, experienced, and interdisciplinary team to develop outstanding solutions to significant requirements on multifaceted full scope space system development programs. The Software Systems Engineering position requires validated strength in modern large-scale cloud-based software systems. To be successful, one must be willing to stretch beyond their experience base and try new things to achieve daring and sophisticated objectives. This role is best suited to individuals who are self-starters, highly motivated, work well in fast paced multi-discipline team environments, and are able to work with quick decisions for the best interest of the business.
Boeing creates the next generation products and services for the Boeing Defense, Space & Security business. We work with proprietary customers in the development of the next-generation technologies in space. Our team focuses on rapid prototyping to demonstrate a host of mission-focused technologies for a variety of customers. Our group works all facets of engineering from technology investment, concept development, proposal writing, requirements and design, build, integration, test, and demonstration of products in their relevant environments.
Position Responsibilities:

  • Support the design of a cloud-based ground system architecture using modern DevSecOps CI/CD pipelines and technology stacks
  • Work closely with program IPTs, customers, external partners, cloud service providers, and data providers/consumers
  • Model large-scale software architecture including documenting use cases, activity diagrams,
    sequence diagrams, etc.
  • Write strong system and software level requirements
  • Create and maintain software development, integration, and verification plans and procedures using automated testing and continuous verification principles
  • Work closely with other engineering disciplines in an integrated team environment to develop system architecture in compliance with interface definitions and system/subsystem requirements
  • Write software system specifications, algorithm description documents and software requirements
  • Use case development
  • Analyze, verify, and validate performance of hardware and software components in a space/ground system, including integration of hardware/software functionality
  • Develop requirements verification plan, including coordination of required tests for space systems
  • Develop and maintain requirements for innovative new projects
  • Develop use cases and sequence diagrams
  • Develop and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs) for complex space and ground architectures
  • Support software planning for and execution of subsystem and vehicle-level integration and test campaign


This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.
This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship as a condition of employment. An interim and/or final U.S. Top Secret/SCI Clearance Post-Start is required.
Special Program Access or other Government Access Requirements are mandatory for this position.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate degree in Engineering, Physics, or related technical course of study
  • 3+ years of systems engineering or software engineering on aerospace platforms or similar complex systems / highly regulated products


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Level 4: 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience developing software that is compliant to government-driven security and regulatory standards
  • Experience applying Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools (e.g. MagicDraw/Cameo or Rhapsody)
  • Experience working with modern DevSecOps CI/CD pipelines
  • Agile software development and management tools such as Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Git Experience with modern cloud-based software architectures
  • Active Top Secret clearance and SSBI investigation highly desired (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).


Typical Education/Experience:
Experienced (Level 3):
Bachelor's degree and typically 5 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 3 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Lead (Level 4):
Bachelor's degree and typically 9 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 7 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years' experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary Pay Range (Experienced, Level 3): $104,550 - $141,450
Summary Pay Range (Lead, Level 4): $128,350 - $173,650
