Job Description
As a Senior Staff Software Engineer with the Data Platform organization, you will be responsible for leading key initiatives that span different products and significantly affect our platform ecosystem, allowing our customers to create innovative, elegant, and high-performing experiences across multiple devices.
The Platform Persistence group has teams that provide storage API for higher-layer applications, build our Time Series capability, and/or work to scale our application platforms. Depending on the nature of the data, the storage systems include relational databases, non-relational databases such as columnar databases, time-series database, or message queue systems.
Our largest customers are always pushing the limits of the backend storage in terms of size of the data, speed of IO, as well as the number of concurrent transactions. Performance, reliability, and scalability are always at the core of our work.
You will use your experience building modern web technologies and your expertise in performance, architecture, and object-oriented design to push the boundaries of our platform.
You will also collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to develop new and improve on existing platform features.
You will provide technical leadership and be able to coach and mentor other software engineers in different methodologies.
You will provide perspective on leading industry trends, recommendations on new and emerging technologies, and are able to resolve complex technical problems.
Qualifications
The ideal fit would have:
- 10+ years overall experience in software engineering, predominantly backend focused
- Proven experience with development of/on large data services and platforms
- Ability to rapidly prototype MVP solutions integrating new technologies and APIs with existing software
- Expert level understanding of best practices for object-oriented and modularized software
- Advanced knowledge of Java, including parallel, concurrent, and distributed programming
- Experience with major distributed messaging and streaming platforms (Kafka, Pulsar)
- Strong knowledge of both relational and non-relational storage technologies
- Experience with scaling data systems in a service-oriented architecture
- Experience with writing applications and integration layers with 1st and 3rd party APIs
Bonus points for:
- Go
- Apache Flink
- Development and/or deep understanding of FaaS solutions
- Cloud-native technologies and container-based data environments (Kubernetes, Docker, Helm)
- Configuration management and infrastructure automation products, especially Terraform
- Public cloud platforms (Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform)
- Observability concepts, best practices, and technologies, especially OpenTelemetry

A required in office work persona is defined as an employee who is contracted to work from or aligned to a ServiceNow-affiliated office. This persona is required to work from their assigned workplace location 100% of the work week based on the business needs of their role.
Flexible
A flexible work persona is defined as an employee who is contracted to work from or aligned to a ServiceNow-affiliated office and will work from their assigned workplace location roughly 3 days/week or less (generally around 40-60% of the work week). Flexible employees may choose to work the remaining working time from their workplace location or home. Flexible employees are required to work within their state, province, region, or country of employment.
Remote
A remote work persona is defined as an employee who performs their responsibilities exclusively outside of a ServiceNow workplace and is not contracted or aligned to a ServiceNow-affiliated office, including those whose place of work (pursuant to their terms and conditions of employment) is their home. Remote employees are required to work within their state, province, region, or country of employment.
