About the Role
Uber Systems Engineers help Uber grow its service to more people worldwide by operating and improving our production fleet and the supporting systems that allow us to scale our hardware infrastructure gracefully and efficiently. In this role, you will be instrumental in helping us build maturity and depth by solving challenging open-ended and systemic hardware problems.
What You'll Do
You will maximise your software engineering, systems engineering, hardware/Linux OS/kernel knowledge, cloud knowledge, and infrastructure systems experience to investigate and solve ambiguous problems in our production environments fleet while also contributing to planning, new systems design, and improvement of existing tools and systems to enable even greater efficiency and insight.

• Contribute to planning, design and architecture, and building of systems and tooling and observability in support of production server fleet reliability, and cloud expansion efforts
• Lead and implement investigative efforts into high-visibility systemic hardware and performance issues found in production, communicating regularly with key peers, TPMs, and hardware engineers on status, issues, and hand-offs

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of relevant SRE and/or DevOps engineering experience
• BS degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field, оr equivalent industry experience
• Background in multiple programming languages, e.g., C/C++, Python, Go, etc.
• Strong hands-on experience with Linux investigating and debugging performance problems
• Server hardware understanding (BIOS, firmware, etc.)
• Ability to root cause problems at the intersection of the Kernel and hardware
• An instinct and intuition to automate whatever you can and improve the efficiency of our processes
• An inherent aim to collaborate, both within the team and across orgs
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to write detailed design documents, post mortems
• A belief that your team can accomplish more together than as separate individuals
• Attention to detail, particularly around software engineering fundamentals, testing methodologies, and quality

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cloud and migration to cloud is a plus
• Strong understanding of Linux kernel internals, e.g., ability to read and understand kernel code.
• Experience in kernel, hardware performance evaluation, tuning, and debugging. systemtap, perf, and eBPF are some of our day-to-day tools.
• Experience in hardware health monitoring solutions - building and/or deploying them
• An understanding of server hardware at scale: data center network fundamentals, OS imaging, provisioning, distribution, and configuration deployment at a large scale
• Proficiency with hardware component design internals (e.g., understanding of an MSR register)

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is $171,000 per year - $190,000 per year. For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is $171,000 per year - $190,000 per year. For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is $171,000 per year - $190,000 per year. For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
