What you’ll be doing…

This role will be to lead the newly formed Services and Tool team in the Platforms & Infrastructure (P & I) organization reporting to the P & I Senior Vice President. The Services and Tools team owns a broad charter including two primary areas: an established internal Builder Tools team and our newly formed Core Services team which will provide foundational services for Tableau products. We are a customer focused organization that empathizes with our developers and looking for a leader who reflects these values.

The successful candidate will be an experienced technical leader with domain knowledge in builder tools, is operationally excellent, and has a proven track record in building foundation services. And who will thrive when leading an organization that collaborates with the developer community at Tableau to deliver innovation to our customers. You will have experience scaling organizations and engineering in a fast changing, complex environment. From a leadership perspective you should be comfortable guiding an organization through change and driving a technical vision. From a coaching perspective, you should be comfortable rolling up your sleeves working with all levels of management and engineers providing guidance and mentorship.

Some of the things you’ll be doing include …

  • Provide organizational leadership across broad technical area including distributed systems, services and developer tools
  • Champion and evangelize the architectural vision for an organization driving technical delivery in an incremental fashion
  • Grow, scale and lead a high performing engineering organization
  • Maintain high delivery and standards bar and reward excellence
  • Drive operational rigor, apply best practices and processes through rapid organizational growth
  • Drive the engineering culture so every team member deeply cares about team velocity, quality, trust, recruiting, and delighting our customers
  • Drive the technical culture so every team member obsesses about scale, performance, security, APIs and ease of use
  • Drive a product roadmap that delivers great developer experience and efficiently.

Who you are…

  • History of strong leadership to drive recruiting, building and growing engineering organizations at scale with people who are geographically distributed across the globe
  • Strong technical background that includes cloud technology, distributed systems, web technologies and build tools
  • Ability to formulate and articulate strategy/vision and effectively drive consensus across the organization
  • Excellence technical communications skills at all levels of the organization including both technical and non-technical individuals
  • Strong organizational judgment and problem-solving
  • Developed collaborative interpersonal communication skills, including verbal, written and listening communications
  • Experience in shipping software or enabling others to ship software products that have high performance, scalability and that are designed with testability in mind
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines while being flexible and responding to changing business and technical conditions

Education/Experience:

  • BS in Computer Science or related field (Graduate Degree in Computer Science or related field is a plus)
  • 15+ years of experience managing a high performing engineering team in a rapidly growing environment
