Director of Internal Audit

| Seattle

The Director of Internal Audit is a key leader for the finance team. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director is responsible for establishing the Internal Audit function for the Company.  The Director is a high-profile role that will work across the organization to help strengthen the internal control environment at Avalara.

 

Job Duties:

  • Develop and maintain standardized best practices, policies, and systems for Internal Audit
  • Lead and coordinate audit assessments evaluating the effectiveness of internal control over financial reporting (includes financial controls and IT general controls)
  • Direct compliance activities, particularly requirements as defined by Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Coordinate with external auditors on their annual audit plan and facilitate with the affected teams to minimize impact
  • Work closely with process owners to ensure corrective action plans are in place to remediate gaps or deficiencies in controls
  • Supervise consultants used to supplement the SOX and internal audit processes
  • Assist with internal investigations regarding financial reporting matters as they arise
  • Report findings and recommendations to senior management and the Audit Committee.
  • Provide audit perspective to special projects assigned, including business and asset acquisitions, financing transactions

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, MBA or Master’s Degree in Accounting preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) credential required.  Public company experience strongly desired
  • Ten or more years related job experience, including experience in public accounting and leading and developing high performing teams
  • Proven and thorough knowledge of US GAAP, COSO internal control framework, PCAOB audit standards, and other regulatory requirements                       
  • Outstanding knowledge of internal control concepts and experience evaluating and determining the adequacy of controls
  • Thorough understanding of audit industry best practices
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with ability to connect with individuals at all levels in the organization, especially strong executive presence with ability to communicate at the C-Suite and Board level
