Smartsheet is looking for a Staff Accountant to join our Corporate Accounting Team. The individual in this role will take on responsibility for all aspects of payroll accounting including necessary calculations, preparation of payroll-related journal entries and supporting workpapers for both our U.S. and U.K. entities, and preparation of necessary balance sheet reconciliations for accounts associated with payroll liabilities. Additionally, this individual will take part in performance of other Corporate Accounting tasks as necessary, depending on the individual’s interests, affinities, and team needs. It is imperative that this individual works well cross-functionally as they will frequently collaborate with our Payroll team and our Stock Admin team (both of which are part of People Operations). The ideal candidate is curious, eager to learn, detail oriented, efficient, and highly organized. This position reports to the Corporate Accounting Manager.


  • Prepare journal entries associated with all regular payrolls for Smartsheet employees
  • Prepare journal entries for all bonus plans
  • Collaborate with Stock Admin team to understand activity in our equity plans; prepare the necessary journal entries to reflect this activity
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations for all payroll-related accounts
  • Take part in analyzing monthly GL account variances
  • Perform other corporate accounting tasks as needed (these may include share-based compensation, sales commissions accounting, etc.)
  • Collaborate with our Tax department to understand journal entries needed to ensure tax compliance
  • Assist with other projects, as needed


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • 3+ years relevant work experience
  • Strong planning and organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Detail-oriented to provide high-level of accuracy 
  • Positive customer service attitude with a desire to learn and grow
  • Ability to provide excellent service in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient with MS Office Excel
  • Ability to analyze problems, develop/recommend solutions, and resolve issues
