We serve more than 100M users worldwide directly through our apps and in partnership with mobile device makers like Samsung and mobile carriers like AT&T. We also serve businesses with a rapidly maturing SaaS platform designed to help call center operators, marketers and others who rely on real time connections to amplify trust in their brand to reach more customers.

What will you do: 

We are looking for a data science intern to develop insights and solutions for the massive corpus of text created by our set of over 100 million users worldwide. User input is at the core of our service, however when it is provided as an unstructured text, special analytic and scaling problems are manifested. This internship will involve quantifying the misclassification of text strings by designing a survey instrument in Amazon’s Mechanical Turk platform. Once quantifying the problem and identifying a training data set, we will move on to feature development using modern NLP algorithms, e.g. Global Vectors and fastText. We will focus on the performance of three machine learning algorithms, XGBoost, Random Forests, and Neural Networks, for text classification. You will provide a performance assessment of these algorithms using standard statistical techniques, specifically confusion matrices.

We expect you to be excited and passionate about learning new things and participating! We don’t expect you to be an expert, but want you to be proactively investigate ideas and options.

To be successful, you'll need to apply your background in data science and machine learning, and be proficient in Python to operate independently. Familiarity with AWS and setting up analytic pipelines is a bonus.

You will work among Hiya’s research and engineering staff. We will assign an individual that will be your main support while you do this project, but you’ll interact with a lot of people. We’ll have regular check-in meetings to see how things are going and make adjustments as necessary.
