About the Role
Highspot is seeking a business-minded, technology-focused lawyer to serve as Lead Product Counsel and, over time, to build the Legal Product Team at a rapidly growing, Series E startup valued at over $2B. As Lead Product Counsel, you will provide advice to Highspot’s product and engineering teams. Specific responsibilities will include advising on product roadmaps, identifying compliance and regulatory issues, and privacy by design. You will also work cross-functionally with other teams, including Security and Marketing. Experience with data protection and privacy at a B2B SaaS company and/or with Artificial Intelligence is strongly preferred. The successful candidate will be entrepreneurial, technology savvy, client-service oriented, and comfortable with ambiguous situations. The role requires application of complex, evolving legal frameworks to new and innovative products and services. This is a great opportunity to join a growing legal department and establish the product counsel team, learn about interesting new technologies, and work on novel issues in an exciting, fast-paced environment.
What You'll Do
- Integrate with and act as a legal advisor for Highspot’s product and engineering teams; help build scalable and effective processes for legal review and launch of new products or features, while balancing user, commercial, risk, and policy considerations.
- Review global products, features, platforms, and initiatives to provide practical legal risk mitigation strategies across multiple jurisdictions.
- Collaborate with legal department subject matter experts to analyze and communicate legal risks to business partners.
- Coordinate with marketing, intellectual property, security, privacy, commercial, and other cross-functional teams on multi-disciplinary issues.
- Help compliance efforts with respect to global privacy and data protection laws and other product-related regulations and industry standards.
- Assist with privacy impact assessments, recording processing activities, putting in place data processing agreements with new subprocessors, managing sub (and sub sub) processors, updating risk and incident registers, and assisting with data subject requests.
- Champion privacy in the business and assist with risk management and help build privacy by design into product roadmaps.
- Lead outside counsel relationships as appropriate.
Your Background
- 5+ years of relevant legal experience (though more, even much more, experience is welcome), including in product, privacy, data protection, advertising law, intellectual property, or security.
- Strong technical background and significant hands-on product counseling experience, preferably at a rapidly-growing SaaS or other technology company.
- Ability to learn the product and proactively identify and analyze opportunities and risks.
- Ability to work on multiple projects, to prioritize (and reprioritize) multiple tasks and workstreams.
- Exceptional communication skills, including a thoughtful legal bedside manner, and the ability to explain complex ideas in a succinct and impactful manner.
- Strong project-management skills, with attention to detail.
- Solution-oriented, customer service, and growth mindset - you welcome diverse perspectives and engage problems with curiosity.
- A good, thoughtful human being and teammate that is risk aware, not risk averse.
- JD from an accredited law school and an active state bar member in good standing.
Bonus Points for the Following Expertise & Skills
- Experience drafting terms, policies, consents, and disclaimers, including identifying where changes are needed.
- Experience working with international offices and managing outside counsel.
- Knowledge of key privacy regulations (e.g., ePrivacy, GDPR, CCPA, LGPD and the Privacy Act (AU)) and desire to learn about privacy regulations in additional jurisdictions as we grow.
- In-house experience at a rapidly growing technology company (especially SaaS) advising engineering and product teams on privacy and product-related regulatory requirements.
