We’re looking for an entrepreneurially-minded individual to act as an evangelist, liaison, and community host. This person would specifically focus on Discord moderation, on-platform events, and other activities to engage and connect with the broader Nori Discord community. Ideally, this individual would be a self-starter with experience in blockchain and crypto, combined with some experience in customer success and marketing at an early stage startup. Mission alignment (solve climate change) is a must. Opportunity for fast and continuous career growth.

About Nori

We’re a team of believers. We believe that humanity can stop and even reverse climate change by removing over 1 trillion tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. How do we get people to remove that much carbon at scale? Pay them! Nori’s marketplace is the infrastructure that creates the financial incentive for people and companies to remove massive amounts of CO2 from the air.

Nori is a venture-backed and highly values-oriented company. Our focus is on people and the planet. We’re composed of a diverse set of people with complementary skill sets, all unified in the mission of restoring the world’s atmospheric carbon balance back to 300ppm.

We strongly suggest that you read in detail about our company values and mission at https://nori.com/careers.

About the role

Community Manager - Discord

Who You’ll Work With

You’ll be leading Discord Community engagement at Nori. However, you will work closely with the supply and methodology teams, which are led by our program manager, as well as work with the head of sales & customer development. You will also communicate often with executive leadership to determine the strategy and priorities of the community over the short and long term.

Each of these teams work a little bit differently, but they work hand in hand with each other to create an inventory of verified carbon removals that can be sold through our marketplace.

There are four core teams in Nori: the Supply & Methodology Team, the Demand Team, the Product Team and the Communications and Marketing Team. Below we outline the two teams you will work most closely with: Demand and Communications. However, we recommend you read more detail on the other teams at https://nori.com/careers

While each person reports to a core team, it is important to note that team members from any of these groups are often part of cross-functional cohorts, such as a designer that reports to the Product Team working on a Customer Discovery cohort lead by the Demand Team. Similar to this, you will report to one team (the Demand Team, lead by Director of Corporate Development) but will be working directly with others members of different teams depending on current projects and business needs.

The Demand Team

The Demand team sells carbon. Specifically they sell NRTs to B2B customers as well as through partnerships with other companies, like NFT marketplaces and carbon footprint companies. They stay in tight communication with the Supply team about how much inventory they will have to work with. And they partner with the Communications & Marketing team around how to get marketing messaging out, and create new content for presenting to potential customers and partners.

The Community Team is a new sub-team of the Demand Team. This is where you will be.

The Communications and Marketing Team

The Comms and Marketing team produces and hosts our two podcasts, Reversing Climate Change and Carbon Removal Newsroom, as well as manages all our marketing and social media channels.

Five key aspects of the role:

  • Represent Nori’s culture and grow an aligned community via Discord. Nori’s online Discord community should be a reflection of the values and collaborative spirit that Nori has as part of its culture (see Nori’s core values at https://nori.com/careers ). We need a Community Manager who naturally aligns with these values. You will be responsible for synthesizing community engagement requirements from stakeholders on all of our internal teams into community channels to meet the company goals. You will also be expected to work with your team and any appropriate stakeholders on how to define and track progress for the community growth, engagement, and sentiment around the NORI token (https://nori.com/token).
  • Be the bridge between the Discord community and Nori. Share what each group is thinking with the other so that Nori’s internal team and the Discord community are in sync. It’ll be your job to know what’s going on at Nori, what we are working on, understand the history of decisions, and share that within the Discord community. Additionally, you will be expected to keep your finger on the pulse of what’s going on in the community and share that with the internal team, such as tracking what trends we’re seeing in the community, what questions come up the most often, what opportunities for improvements are arising. You should be able to represent the customer and token holder perspective in all aspects of work including company meetings. You will work with various teams to identify different stakeholders and align on the motivations and expectations of these customer groups.
  • Communicate with excellence. We’re looking for a clear and concise communicator. You’ll be expected to learn quickly, as Nori has a bit of a steep learning curve, and then demonstrate an ability to synthesize the key messages that should be shared with external stakeholders in the Discord community. Show us how you can pick up on complex ideas and boil it down to the key points, because that’s what you’ll be doing as you view updates from the team and share them out!
  • Be a champion for the community. Again, your role internally is to listen to the community, get a sense of what they need, and advocate for their needs within Nori. You will be the voice of Nori’s online community and thus will inform leadership roadmaps and decisions. This doesn’t just mean “communicate” what the community is thinking or how they’re behaving, what we mean here is it is your job to ADVOCATE for your members. This might require some push-back on decisions, or speaking up on potential problems or opportunities as decisions are made. The success of the community depends on how well you serve and represent the community to the team!
  • Leverage technical expertise and capabilities. You should be the type of experienced Community Manager who knows what it takes to build and maintain a robust community from the ground up. It’s your responsibility to know what the community team is capable of and balance that with what our community stakeholders and members need.  That is, based on your expertise and best-practices, you are expected to both create the Discord, and also lead in the continuous development and improvement of the online community that maximizes value for both the community and Nori’s goals.

You’ll Be Responsible For…

  • Maintain and promote a vibrant community culture on Discord that appropriately reflects the culture and values of Nori, while maintaining quality control
  • Develop a robust onboarding system for new users and ensure their continued success in learning about the NORI Token, team, and company.
  • Answer non-technical user questions, troubleshoot, and relay tougher questions and trends of what the community is saying to the team, helping us to identify opportunities to improve our comms and content
  • Share announcements, articles, videos, podcasts, memes, educational content with the community on a regular basis, including sharing announcements and updates in a read-only telegram channel
  • Build relationships with existing community members and recruit new members into the community.
  • Proactively and regularly check in with team leads to determine what items (news, updates, requests) should be shared via the Discord community.  For example: write and disseminate critical information about token updates, company updates, product launches, as well as tech issues as they arise
  • Empower community members to take leadership roles as part-time moderators based globally
  • Planning & execution of contests and giveaways
  • Celebrate, monitor, track, and report on important feedback, reviews, and incredible stories that come from our community
  • Host weekly update/performance meetings
  • Networking with relevant blockchain projects to establish strategic relationships
  • Synthesize insights from community interactions and surface critical issues to the engineering team
  • Report on the health of our community servers, and make recommendations for improvement
  • Promote optimization of processes, tools, and teams for best community program output
  • Organize and host events / community calls on our Discord server on a regular basis with existing community stakeholders
  • Keep internal and external informational resources up to date in an environment of rapid iteration. Inform additional team members of any resources that you’ve identified need creation or updates.
  • Contribute ideas and effort to our brand, content, and community strategies

Must-haves

  • 1-2 years moderating a Discord-based community, or demonstrated success in launching and growing at least one Discord community for a project to large scale
  • Fluent in verbal and written English
  • Experience working in a startup environment
  • Strong understanding and passion for crypto and blockchain terminology
  • Strong work ethic, communication skills, writing ability, business development sensibility.
  • Comfort with (or eagerness to learn) semi-technical tasks like run scripts for Discord to approve efficiencies
  • Deep curiosity, relentless resourcefulness, and a growth mindset
  • Perfect comfort with frequent context switching
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks in a rapidly shifting landscape
  • Patience and maturity in helping out the new and unacquainted

Nice-to-haves

  • Basic understanding of climate change tech and/or carbon markets
  • Understanding of NFTs
  • Experience with two-sided marketplaces
  • Additional languages including but not limited to: Spanish, French, Russian, Chinese

Key outcomes and metrics

  • Team and company progress is measured in monthly OKRs
  • Community satisfaction metrics as it relates to product and token

You’ll be a good culture fit here if you can...

  • Handle a steep learning curve
  • Work with abstract ideas and requirements to create something more concrete
  • Establish an environment where the Community team can be effective in accomplishing sprint deliverables
  • Address team dynamics with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Ensure a good relationship between the Community team and internal stakeholders
  • Know how to measure progress meaningfully
  • Stay playful and light without taking things too seriously or personally
  • Limit work in progress and stay focused on the current goal

Key challenges in this role

There is a lot of ambiguity in what we’re building, and it’ll be up to you to work with the appropriate internal stakeholders to sort through all the concerns and suggested requirements to make sure we’re still hitting our deliverables. You will also be dealing with multiple teams, each with their own stakeholders, and each with their own opinion on what should or should not be included in requirements. You must have a strong sense of self to navigate these waters and lead teams to clarity on what will or will not be implemented in a sprint. There are a lot of educated and strong opinions inside Nori, and it’s your job to synthesize all those into something we can build.

What’s the payoff for all this hard/fun work?

You’re not just working at some mobile ads startup—you’re directly helping build products to reverse climate change. Here are some of the non-cash benefits we offer:

  • 100% of health, dental, and vision benefits covered for you and dependents
  • Four weeks of PTO, up to five after a year of service
  • Paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s off every year
  • 12 weeks of parental leave
  • 401k with 3% company match
  • Stock options
  • NORI tokens

Beyond those measurable benefits, we also think this is just a really fun place to work:

  • You’ll get to work with experts in carbon sequestration and marketplace economics who are defining a new industry.
  • There is a steep learning curve here, and for people who get excited by that, there’s no better place to be.
  • We have a lot of fun in our office, keep a well-stocked pantry and fridge, and generally like each other’s company. Happy hours in Ballard happen regularly!

Logistics

This position can be remote—Seattle/Miami based preferred, but we would love to have you in our Ballard office in Seattle, WA, and can offer $5,000 relocation assistance.

The expected salary range for this role is between $55,800 to $82,800, depending on experience. We use detailed benchmarking tools to establish salary and equity offers, and everyone at the company is paid in the 55th percentile for their experience and role. For this reason, we’re transparent about what we can pay you, and we don’t negotiate on compensation.
