The Department: Risk Management

Our Risk department plays a critical role in proactively identifying, assessing, responding to, and communicating Gemini’s exposure, both internally and externally. Our Risk team is building a robust second line of defense in a first-of-its kind industry; our goal: safeguard Gemini so that we can continue to empower the individual through crypto.

The Role: Head of Risk 

Gemini is looking for a Head of Risk who will lead and execute a global risk management strategy for the organization. This position reports directly to Gemini’s Chief Operating Officer and will be responsible for structuring and managing the Risk team. The Head of Risk is expected to identify, assess, respond to, and communicate risks pertaining to Gemini’s products and operations. The Head of Risk will work closely with every department across the organization. 

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and execute a global risk management strategy and framework for the organization. Maintain accountability for critical strategic decisions and for the outcome of such decisions
  • Recommend, direct, and implement Enterprise Risk Management, Market Risk Management, and Credit Risk Management strategies and operations and ensure they meet regulatory requirements
  • Work closely with key stakeholders to understand the business requirements for products and services, develop effective working relationships with risk owners, and ensure risks related to products and services are understood by Senior Management
  • Establish and quantify the organization's 'risk appetite' and ensure risk management approach adheres accordingly
  • Provide regular reporting to Senior Management and the Board detailing risk exposures and performance against ‘risk appetite’ to facilitate decision-making
  • Set mission, vision, and goals for the Risk team. Develop, lead, and motivate the Risk team to maximize effectiveness and deliver on goals
  • Foster innovation and drive enhanced efficiency in all Risk processes 
  • Provide proactive and practical risk management advice to key stakeholders
  • Keep abreast of key developments in the global regulatory landscape

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Multi-year experience leading and motivating a global and multi risk-specialty team
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and expertise covering a variety of risk types, including, but not limited to, enterprise, market, credit, and financial risk
  • A deep understanding of risk management frameworks
  • General understanding of trade desk risk monitoring and counterparty due diligence
  • Detail oriented with strong analytical skills and the ability to explain complex concepts
  • Practical and commercial approach to problem solving
  • Ability to communicate at varying seniority levels, including Senior Management and the Board 
  • Proven track record of delivering enhancements to process efficiency 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced fintech environment
  • Strong drive and proactivity to continuously strengthen the risk management in a fast-growing organization
  • Working knowledge of cryptocurrency/DeFi ecosystem and regulatory landscape
  • Knowledge of financial services industry and regulatory landscape

Salary Range: In compliance with the New York City Pay Transparency Law, the base salary range for this role is between $240,000 - $360,000 in New York City. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate’s compensation, we consider a number of factors including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
