Microsoft Silicon and Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft's expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft's "Intelligent Cloud" mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. The FW CoE is responsible for HW/FW for Azure Infrastructure and the required software stack to maintain it.

We are looking for a highly motivated Principal Software Engineer - Firmware Freshness with a background in scalable, distributed cloud services working on enterprise scale. These software services will light up firmware deployments flows for existing and upcoming GPU product lines that Azure supports and distribute key bits to millions of machines in tight SLA.

You have demonstrated the capability of technically leading members of the team through product development cycles, capable of leading software development for new and sustaining products.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and operate large scale, low latency, and high throughput cloud services.
  • Work on highly complex and mission critical solutions that involve multiple Azure Services.
  • Provide overarching technical direction to a team of focused developers to deliver globally present and scalable deployment framework solutions for Azure Fleet.
  • Being part of fundamental Azure infrastructure eco-system, work closely with the core Azure teams and the data center operations teams to ensure customers are running the latest and greatest firmware on their hardware.
  • Take an active role and partner with internal peer teams and external partners to ensure highly available, fully secure, accurate and actionable results based on hardware health signals, policies, and predictive analytics.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years hands-on experience on leading architecture for large scale system (with an availability of five 9's), designing and coding on mission critical scalable distributed systems and running live site.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate not only has experience in distributed cloud services but also understands basics of Hardware/ Firmware
  • Passion for customers and confidence to ship reliable software that customer loves.
  • Demonstrated experience working in collaborative teams and cross-group efforts.
  • Proven ability to plan, schedule and deliver high quality software.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
