Building the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.
The Role
Experienced and independent Product Designer needed to shape the product and user experience for IonQ's software suite, including the Quantum Cloud Console, APIs, and SDKs. Collaborate with teams to deliver high-quality user experiences, conduct user research, and utilize data-driven design methods. Ideal candidate must have 7+ years of experience in Product Design or similar roles.
Summary Generated by Built In

IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

We are looking for an experienced and independent Product Designer to help shape the product and user experience for our software suite, which includes the IonQ Quantum Cloud Console, APIs, and SDKs, as well as a collection of internally-facing tools that support the effective operation and management of our quantum computers. As a Product Designer at IonQ, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to shape IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

You don’t have to be an expert in quantum physics, quantum algorithms, machine learning, or heterogeneous computing environments to be successful in this role, but familiarity and willingness to learn help — you’ll be working to enable experts in all of this and more.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate curiosity and intellectual humility, be familiar with developer-focused products, and work well with highly specialized experts in technical industries. These skills and acumen in all aspects of the design process — from research and testing to interaction design to microcopy — will be critical in successfully synthesizing customer feedback, stakeholder feedback, our capability roadmap, and commercial and operational goals into a world-class product. This is a unique opportunity to significantly impact IonQ’s success and drive key design and interaction principles for the quantum computing industry as it grows and matures.

Responsibilities:

  • Define and deliver the product experience — look, feel, and most importantly, functional details — of the software tools and websites comprising IonQ’s customer-facing software product suite, primarily focusing on the IonQ Quantum Cloud.
  • Collaborate with multiple teams and stakeholders to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality, efficient end-to-end user experiences.
  • Identify and utilize appropriate design methods such as writing, wireframes, comps, prototypes, detailed specs/acceptance criteria, etc in a timely and iterative environment.
  • Conduct small-scale user research and usability testing studies — think Just Enough Research, not Observing the User Experience — to help define our users’ problems and needs, communicate learning to the broader organization, and ensure that our product experience and roadmap reflect user understanding and empathy.
  • Use a data-driven approach, defining, tracking, and improving key success metrics for user experience and effectiveness across different products and interaction points.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • 7+ years of experience in Product Design, Service Design or similar roles that own the end-to-end discovery, design, and delivery of product experiences throughout the customer journey, which may include activities such as:
    • Creating concepts, personas, user journeys, storyboards, system maps, user flows, wireframes, design systems, information architecture, visual design comps and prototypes
    • Developing, synthesizing, and documenting user testing and interviews, incorporating it into product solutions such as user interface design and user experience design for desktop apps, websites, and mobile interfaces
  • A portfolio of shipped work that demonstrates your experience and ability with a variety of projects, practices, and platforms.
  • Experience designing for technical or developer-focused products, API/CLI-driven experiences and/or software that supports these products
  • Excellent written, visual, and oral communication abilities, with the ability to deliver analytical and persuasive messages to engineers, executives, and customers.
  • A dedication to continuous improvement, with an ability to balance, prioritize, and ship both minor improvements and entirely new products and experiences

Ideal candidates would also be able to demonstrate a majority of the following:

  • Experience in human factors research, HCI, industrial design, or similar disciplines at the intersection of people, usability, and technology.
  • Experience developing insightful and clear research questions that resonate with highly technical audiences and meaningfully inform product strategy.
  • Experience or familiarity with science, math, statistical, and data visualization tools (Mathematica, Wolfram, R, D3, Python, etc) as a user or designer.
  • Experience with design systems, especially design systems with paired component libraries — we use Figma, React and Storybook for our design system, but believe approach is ultimately more important than specific tool experience.
  • Experience or familiarity in front end development and developer workflow tools such as Javascript, CSS, Git, CI/CD, whether as a UX engineer or tool designer.

What We Do

Quantum computers are a revolutionizing technology — they have the potential to transform business, society, and the planet for the better, and IonQ is at the forefront of this revolution.

After over 25 years of academic research, IonQ was founded in 2015 by Chris Monroe and Jungsang Kim with $2 million in seed funding from New Enterprise Associates, a license to core technology from the University of Maryland and Duke University, and the goal of taking trapped ion quantum computing out of the lab and into the market. In the following three years, we raised an additional $20 million from GV, Amazon Web Services, and NEA, and built two of the world’s most accurate quantum computers.

In 2019, we raised another $55 million in a round led by Samsung and Mubadala, and announced partnerships with Microsoft and Amazon Web Services to make our quantum computers available via the cloud.

In 2020 and 2021, we built additional generations of high performance quantum hardware, added Google Cloud Marketplace to our cloud partner roster and announced a series of collaborations and business partnerships with leading academic and commercial institutions.

On October 1st, 2021, IonQ began trading as IONQ on the New York Stock Exchange, making it the world's first public pure-play quantum computing company. We remain hard at work realizing the world-changing potential of quantum computing.

Why Work With Us
