So what are we looking for in new team members? At Scribd, Inc., we hire for “GRIT.” Traditionally defined as the intersection of passion and perseverance toward long-term goals, GRIT reflects the mindset we expect from every employee. For us, it also serves as a practical framework for how we work: setting and achieving Goals, delivering Results within your role, contributing Innovative ideas and solutions, and strengthening the broader Team through collaboration and attitude.

This posting reflects an approved, open position within the organization.

About the Team

The Web Platform team builds the shared foundations that enable Scribd’s product teams to ship high-quality web experiences efficiently. We focus on scalable frontend architecture, shared libraries and tooling, and durable patterns that improve velocity, reliability, and maintainability across our web ecosystem.

A major focus for the team is Web Modernization: migrating legacy SPAs to a Next.js-powered Microfrontend architecture, enabling faster iteration, safer scaling, and long-term confidence in how Scribd’s web product evolves.

About the Role

We’re hiring a Senior Software Engineer, Web Platform to help drive Scribd’s Web Modernization program and build the frontend foundations for our next generation of web product experiences.

You’ll lead major modernization workstreams — migrating complex legacy web applications into a modern Microfrontend ecosystem, creating repeatable migration patterns and shared foundations other teams can build on — while ensuring performance, developer experience, and user impact stay high throughout the transition.
This is a hands-on role with broad influence: you’ll ship production-critical frontend code, define patterns and boundaries that other teams build on, and partner cross-functionally to make architectural change practical and durable.

What You’ll Bring

Key Attributes

  • Strong ownership mindset, taking responsibility for frontend systems from design through long-term evolution

  • Strong systems thinking, with the ability to reason about frontend architecture at scale

  • Pragmatic approach to modernization, balancing ideal solutions with incremental, low-risk progress

  • Strong collaboration skills and comfort working closely with both product and platform teams.

  • Long-term perspective on maintainability, extensibility, and developer experience

Experience We Value

  • 6+ years of professional frontend software engineering experience

  • Deep experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and React

  • Hands-on experience with Next.js or similar modern web frameworks

  • Experience working with or migrating large, complex, or legacy frontend codebases

  • Familiarity with Microfrontend architectures, monorepos, or shared frontend platforms

  • Familiarity integrating modern frontends with Rails-backed systems is a plus

  • Strong understanding of web performance, bundling, and optimization techniques

  • Experience collaborating with backend and platform teams to define clean integration patterns

  • Comfort operating in environments with high traffic, high visibility, and real user impact

What Sets You Apart

  • You’ve helped modernize frontend systems in production, not just greenfield projects

  • You think about frontend architecture as a product for other engineers, not just a delivery mechanism

  • You consider performance, accessibility, SEO, quality, and observability as first-class concerns

  • You invest in testing and quality practices that make large-scale migrations safe and repeatable

  • You enjoy untangling complexity and leaving systems better than you found them

  • You care deeply about how technical decisions affect both developers and end users

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
