About the Role: 
The Data Operations team is one of the largest and most important teams at PitchBook Data, totaling over four hundred people across three continents. It is responsible for the core of what we do as a company, provide high quality data on the private markets. This is done through our various data collection processes consisting of web-based data scraping, entering of data from publicly available documents, web researching of hard-to-find information and direct communication with executives/investors/advisors involved in transactions and fundraising. We also like to have fun and believe strongly in some of our traditions such as baked good Mondays, potluck breakfast Fridays and our Panther mascot.
As an Associate Data Engineer, you will work across a global team of analysts and data operation associates to develop new data technologies for Data Operations at PitchBook. We’re looking for a person who can combine proficiency in data engineering technologies (SQL, Python, AWS, Data Warehousing & ETL tools, Power BI) with an operational mindset and deliver powerful new data sourcing and processing tools to the team. You will be responsible for extracting data from external sources and working alongside senior members of the team to build out the infrastructure necessary to operationalize the data. You will also spend time learning PitchBook’s data operations processes and methodologies and establishing the process knowledge necessary to develop effective data solutions.
Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Extracting data from various sources, including web scraping, API requests, etc. 
  • Working with Data Engineers to build complex data pipelines that automate data sourcing and processing
  • Develop programs to synchronize technology and human-powered processes
  • Collaborate with senior team members to design and maintain database and data warehousing solutions
  • Develop automated reports to monitor and track data pipelines (Power BI, Tableau) 
  • Play a key role in continuing to build out a newly formed data engineering function in the department 
  • Work alongside Data Operations teams to augment core technologies

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Business, Finance, Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science or related fields 
  • 0-1 year of relevant experience working as a Data Engineer, Business Intelligence Engineer and/or Data Analyst 
  • Intermediate Python skills with experience in web scraping, OCR, REST APIs, data manipulation and ETLs 
  • Familiarity with software engineering best practices (e.g. unit testing, code reviews, design, continuous delivery, git, test automation and build\deploy systems) 
  • Strong SQL skills, with experience querying large datasets from multiple sources and developing automated reporting
  • Experience with Snowflake is a plus 
  • Familiarity with AWS cloud computing services 
  • Proficiency in Tableau or Power BI (both is a plus)
  • Excellent Microsoft Office/PC skills, Advanced Excel experience analyzing data and creating daily/weekly/monthly reports 
  • Ability to display complex quantitative data in a simple, intuitive format and to present findings in a clear and concise manner 
  • Capable of investigating, familiarizing and mastering new data sets quickly 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks at once 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex data issues correctly and clearly to both internal and external customers
