Do you want to be part of a team that is building Microsoft’s Intelligent Supply Chain, enabling end-to-end visibility, insights and optimization?  We’re looking for a talented Data Engineer who wants to get their hands on large and complex datasets and databases, with deep knowledge of SQL database design, distributed systems and computer science, who’s interested in working alongside data scientists to build and deploy cutting-edge analytical capabilities and drive business impact.

The Devices Supply Chain organization is critical to delivering on this mission, with responsibility for the end-to-end supply chain for Microsoft’s vast array of hardware products including the entire line of Surface devices and accessories, Xbox consoles and accessories, PC Hardware, next-generation products like Holo-lens, and more. 

 

As part of the Devices Supply Chain organization, the Data Science and Platform team is leveraging data and modeling in new ways to increase visibility & transparency, improve insights and decisions, and optimize service levels, costs and customer experience. We develop and deploy machine learning and deep learning models, statistical methods and other advanced analytical techniques to enable a variety of supply chain capabilities. For example, we forecast demand for all Microsoft devices globally, enabling our supply chain to match supply with demand and deliver a great customer experience while minimizing inventory investment.

 

These capabilities are built on top of an extensive data and computation platform, with an ever-expanding set of data pipelines, modeling libraries and operational requirements. The platform enables our Data Scientists to efficiently ingest and explore input data, develop models, conduct feature engineering and experimentation, deploy models to production, and provide ongoing support to our business stakeholders. All of this needs to be done with a focus on engineering best practices, efficiency, scalability and reliability.

Responsibilities

 

As a Data Engineer on the Data Science and Platform team, you will:

  • Develop and maintain data pipelines including solutions for data collection, management and usage.
  • Work closely with Data Scientists to optimize and reengineer model code to be modular, efficient and scalable, and to deploy models to production.
  • Maintain and enhance our data and computation platform.
  • Develop and implement solutions for data quality validation and continuous improvement.
  • Manage, execute and monitor weekly and monthly production operations; resolve and escalate production issues as appropriate.
  • Partner with data scientists, PMs, engineers and business stakeholders to understand business and technical requirements, plan and execute projects, and communicate status, risks and issues.
  • Perform root cause analysis of system and data issues and develop solutions as required.

Qualifications

 

Required

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or Information Systems.
  • Proficient in SQL and database architecture.
  • Experience working with cloud-based technologies, including relational databases, data warehouse, big data (e.g., Hadoop, Spark), orchestration/data pipeline tools.
  • Experience with Azure Analytics stack, e.g., Azure Data Lake, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory.
  • Experience with ETL data pipelining concept.
  • Proficient in Power BI
  • Experience working in software engineering, and can demonstrate best practices for project management, quality control, and product development.
  • Proven track record of collaborative development in an agile team environment.
  • Experience with R, Python and libraries for data exploration, modeling and visualization, e.g., ggplot2.

 

Preferred:

  • Machine Learning experience
  • Experience with infrastructure automation technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience building APIs and services using REST.
