Our Opportunity:

Chewy is hiring a Director of Engineering for our Sponsored Products team in Seattle, WA or Boston, MA.  Sponsored Ads creates a win-win ecosystem for shoppers, brand owners and Chewy! Shoppers are offered a range of alternate options to help them choose better and learn about new products, new brands, new promotions, and different price points. Brand owners and advertisers get to showcase their product offerings in the front row for their target audience (proud pet parents) and maximize their reach. Advertising is a critical component of the ecommerce ecosystem and provides a critical revenue stream to the company. 

As an early member to the newly setup Sponsored Advertising team, you’ll be part of core leadership team and will influence technical strategy across product search and discovery, relevance and ranking, prediction, and auction of large selection of sponsored products in Chewy catalog. You’ll be leading a team of smart engineers and managers and will be at forefront of driving technology driven business impact. As Director for Sponsored ads, you’ll lead the technical strategy for the team, be responsible for company-level initiatives, work across tech-partners from peer teams and influence overall Chewy’s technical strategy.

What you'll do:

  • Own, lead, and manage roadmap of large-scale distributed systems that process and serve large volumes of data and operate with very low latency.
  • You will be tasked with building and managing multiple scrum teams comprised of software development managers, software engineers, quality engineers and technical product managers to deliver high quality software as part of the fastest growing e-commerce company on the market.
  • Provide strong technical leadership, build autonomous teams & deliver on an ambition’s roadmap in the Sponsored Ads market.
  • Mentor technical leaders and provide career development and professional growth of our amazing engineers and managers.
  • Oversee work of talented cross-functional teams to strategically plan, design and develop solutions critical to Chewy’s business.
  • Establish strong working relationships at all organizational levels and across functional teams.
  • Work with others in engineering management to drive best practices in software development, testing and production operations.
  • Contribute to technical architecture decisions and lead efforts to build and maintain a highly scalable software platform.
  • Identify and manage priorities within the context of overall corporate objectives, drive 1-, 2- and 3-year plans.
  • Drive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative development. Decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions that operationally scale and are easily maintained.
  • Exhibit excellent verbal and written communication and convey dissenting opinions in a constructive manner. 

What you'll need:

  • 12+ years of experience building commercial software and relevant experience in leadership roles within engineering organizations.
  • Must be a believer in Agile and Lean methodologies and have experience in evolving them at scale.
  • A track record of highly influential technical and leadership achievements, strong and current technical contributions
  • Strategic manager with strong operational, project management and technical architecture skills
  • Ability to excel within a VERY fast paced startup environment with a flat organizational structure and provide hands-on leadership to our top-tier engineers. 
  • Proficiency in designing scalable, distributed, low latency and high throughput systems.
  • Must be able to identify and manage priorities within the context of overall Advertising business objectives based on data driven decision making.
  • Experienced in managing managers, as well as highly skilled senior engineers/architects.
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or related field
  • Position may require occasional travel.

 Bonus:

  • Masters or PhD in Computer Science or related field.
  • Machine Learning and applied science understanding is a plus.
  • Experience and Domain expertise in digital advertising or marketing technologies or eCommerce/Retail technology stack will be a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience taking a project from inception through launch.
