MECHANICAL ENGINEER (STARLINK)

One of the most ambitious missions that SpaceX has undertaken to date, the Starlink satellite constellation will provide reliable internet to the entire world. As a Structures Engineer on the Starlink team, you will design structures and mechanisms for SpaceX’s mass-produced communication satellites. You will make decisions about design and verification without the constraints of customer certification. And you will rapidly turn your ideas into giant mountains of hardware thanks to extremely tight integration between engineering and production.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, develop and test hardware for the Starlink communication satellites – including primary structure, secondary structure, avionics, and mechanisms
  • Interface with other teams including avionics, payload, propulsion, GNC, software, thermal, and dynamics to maintain design criteria and systems engineering knowledge of the spacecraft
  • Conduct internal design reviews
  • Partner closely with production to ensure a successful hardware outcome
  • Compile and maintain lessons learned in order to influence future designs

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical design, CAD, and hardware verification (including internships, student projects, and professional experience)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3+ years of project experience in a fast-paced team environment
  • Strong demonstrated capability in design, CAD and FEA
  • Demonstrated understanding of structural analysis and failure modes of complex mechanical systems
  • Hands-on experience with mechanism design, prototyping, and precision mechanical assembly
  • Demonstrated knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods
  • Self-motivated with strong multi-tasking, organizational, communication, and documentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively across multi-disciplinary teams

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work extended hours and weekends/holidays as necessary

  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
