The Company You’ll Join

At Carta we create owners and make private markets liquid.

We live in a world where some people live on the equity stack and enjoy exponential wealth growth and preferential tax treatment; others live on the debt stack and may work their entire lives for a company and retire only with the cash they’ve managed to save from their paychecks. Our contribution to solving the wealth inequality problem is moving people from the debt stack (payroll) to the equity stack. By making it as easy to issue equity to employees as it is to put them on payroll, we can create more owners.

At Carta, we are helpful, transparent, fair, and kind. We are relentless executors, unconventional thinkers, and masters of our craft.

 The Team You’ll Work With

Portfolio Insights is building out a product and service that serve as the “connective tissue” between investment firms and their portfolio companies. By simplifying the quarterly reporting of key financial data and KPIs, we are helping investors answer the question: “What are you doing with my money?”

We seek to use the data we collect to improve products across Carta’s vast landscape and spur on new and exciting product initiatives. If you join our team, you can expect to work closely with data scientists and machine learning engineers to dream up and implement these features. In addition, you will join a small but passionate team offering opportunities for close collaboration, mentorship, participation in hiring, and career growth.

We are a small but growing team and each engineer’s effort has an immediate impact on what we’re building towards. Every day we work closely with our Account Managers to improve our services and contribute to larger-scale projects that make our data more accessible throughout the organization.

 The Problems You'll Solve

We have a lot of work to do to ensure that our product offering is scalable and maintainable, and to increase the accessibility and usability of the data we collect across the platform. We are an agile team working together to deliver value to Carta and its customers. The following list will give you an idea of the kind of work our developers do:

  • Building out new customer-facing features and product improvements from end to end, using knowledge of and expertise in Carta’s full tech stack.
  • Working to gradually decompose our code out of a monolithic application and toward a distributed system of services.
  • Collaborating closely with product managers, designers, and other developers to root out requirements and help guide the direction of our feature development.
  • Architecting and maintaining services which ensure the availability and usability of portfolio company data across Carta.
  • Designing client-facing APIs to make portfolio company data useful to our customers.
  • Participating in Carta’s org-wide developer culture to enrich technical dialogue and set a high bar for excellence in engineering.

 The Impact You’ll Have

As one of our first engineering hires, your work will have an outsized impact from the moment you join the team. You will have an opportunity to participate directly in our success, help define our roadmap, and act as one of our primary representatives to the rest of the organization. Because what we do bridges barriers between other pillars of Carta’s business, you will get to work with members of many of Carta’s different platform and product teams.

 About You

You identify closely with Carta’s core identity traits; you are helpful, relentless, unconventional and kind. In addition, you are candid, courteous and respectful of your coworkers. You have a critical eye toward your discipline and are not afraid to push back and defend what you think is important when necessary.

You are a self-starter who is capable of working with ambiguous requirements, driving clarity through collaboration and insight. You will enrich our team’s culture with your strong professional background and unique perspective. You prefer direct communication with end-users, both internal and external, to operating in a silo.

We are looking for a senior software developer with at least 5 years of professional experience. Familiarity with Carta’s tech stack is preferred but not a requirement. We work daily with the following technologies:

  • Python (Django)
  • Typescript (React)
  • Postgresql
  • Docker & Kubernetes
  • gRPC

Familiarity with or interest in the domain we work in (finance, investing, venture capital) is also a nice bonus.

We are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to providing a positive interview experience for every candidate. If accommodations due to a disability or medical condition are needed, connect with us via email at [email protected]. As a company, we value fairness, helpfulness, transparency, leadership and build our teams around these values. Check out our careers page to get to know us better as you think about your next step at Carta.
