SPACE LASER PRECISION MACHINIST

The precision machinist is responsible for machining and processing telescopes for a new production line of in-space laser communication systems. The responsibilities of this role will largely include machining production and development hardware for the communication system, but also includes supporting the establishment of machining practices and maintenance procedures for a precision CNC turning instrument. The success of these measures will enable proper build, test, and integration of optical components, to expand SpaceX’s capabilities to transmit high-rate data via laser communication systems. Your diligence and attention to detail will not only yield success on delivery of In Space Lasers, but also assures success throughout the operation of our Starlink constellation and other future potential contracts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assemble, install, and test flight hardware.
  • Use precision calibrated tools – torque wrenches, micrometers and calipers.
  • Hands-on operations with both large and small fragile assemblies.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, and follow detailed work instructions.
  • Perform work according to procedures, specifications, and test instructions.
  • Use various mechanical tools without instruction.
  • Collaborate with production engineers and quality personal to develop and document activities.
  • Ensure all production services are performed on time, safely and in a professional manner.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of CNC turning machine.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • 5+ years of setting up and operating a mill in machining tight tolerances on the micron level.
  • Experience with metrology to the micron level.
  • Experience working in a production environment in high volume, with smaller processing times and higher repeatability of operations.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficient at all types of drilling, tapping, and CNC turning.
  • Complete machining operations from blueprints, drawings and/or verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge of complex, tight tolerance parts, and various materials.
  • Ability to handle delicate optical components while maintaining product cleanliness and quality.
  • Experience with manufacture of optical components and in using high accuracy gaging.
  • Experience with single-point diamond turning (SPDT).
  • Experience in high volume manufacturing of highly precise instruments.
  • Skill in operating and manipulating machinery and various hand and power tools requiring manual dexterity.
  • A demonstrated ability in reading/understanding technical drawings, manuals and reports.
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments.
  • Experience working in a cleanroom environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work in a high-paced, challenging work environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with Engineering and Production.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs. unassisted.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and be comfortable working in tight spaces.
  • Must be willing to work all shifts, over time, and weekends as needed.
  • Comfortable with repetitive movement, bending or twisting, and using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls.
