The Company You'll Join

At Carta we create owners and make private markets liquid.

We live in a world where some people live on the equity stack, and enjoy exponential wealth growth and preferential tax treatment, while others live on the debt stack, and may work their entire lives for a company and retire only with the cash they’ve managed to save from their paychecks. Our contribution to solving the wealth inequality problem is moving people from the debt stack (payroll) to the equity stack. By making it as easy to issue equity to employees as it is to put them on payroll, we can create more owners.

Today private markets are opaque and illiquid. Public markets are transparent and liquid. There is no in between. Carta is on a mission to fundamentally change capital markets infrastructure, and make private markets liquid.

At Carta, we are helpful, transparent, fair, and kind. We are relentless executors, unconventional thinkers, and masters of our craft.

If Carta succeeds, we will have helped to create a fairer world. If we succeed, we will have created the next generation of great founders, executives, and thinkers. To learn more, here is what one of our investors wrote about leading our Series F.

The Team You’ll Work With

This role is for Carta Investor Services business unit. As the first hire for our tax team, you will incubate this initiative within the R&D organization, reporting directly to our VP of Product. You will work closely with our product strategy, engineering, design, and fund administration team to scope and build our tax offering.

The investor services team operates with one team mentality. We come together to solve problems for our customers. We pass on ego. We nurture a team environment that promotes taking risks and being bold. We are owners and that is the only title that matters.

The Problems You’ll Solve

At the end of each calendar year, venture capital funds and SPVs are required to file Form 1065 with the IRS and distribute Schedule K-1s to their LPs. While most of the data required to prepare these forms lives in Carta today, the current processes to generate Form 1065 and Schedule K-1 require manual data entry and back-and-forth between Carta and our third-party tax partners. We aim to automate and streamline these workflows by building software tools to reduce the time to generate these tax forms using the data that lives in Carta today.

As Carta’s first tax hire, you will help us to streamline and automate many of these manual workflows. Some of the problems you will help us solve include:

  • Where does the data used to generate Form 1065s and Schedule K-1s live in our data model today? How can this data be made more accessible to our partners?
  • What are the most common tax adjustments applied to GAAP accounting entries when calculating taxable income? What logic/rules do we need to add to our existing ledger?
  • What should our internal processes look like in order to streamline communications and distribute Schedule K-1s in as timely a manner as possible?
  • What other considerations should we take into account outside of the regular tax season? (I.e. which questions should we be prepared to answer on a year-round basis?)
  • Where are the breakpoints at which fund taxes become too complex to support through software and require manual/custom tax advisory services?

The Impact You’ll Have

Carta is quickly becoming the go-to software for venture capital firms to track their investments, manage their LPs, and run their back offices. Over the last two years, Carta’s fund administration business has grown to become the standard for industry-leading firms like Boldstart Ventures, Tribe Capital, and K9 Ventures. As we continue to grow as an all-in-one solution for venture firms, tax preparation services are a critical piece in the next phase of our product development. As Carta’s first tax hire, you will help us develop products to better support both our clients and tax partners in managing tax filings for venture funds and SPVs.

About You

We are seeking an individual who combines a deep understanding and expertise of fund taxes with a desire to solve complex problems through software.  We believe that empowering experts with software is ultimately the best approach to delivering a best-in-class experience.

The ideal candidate for this role is someone with:

  • 5+ years of experience working with a traditional tax firm and generating Form 1065s and Schedule K-1s for venture capital funds and SPVs (CPA required)
  • A deep understanding of both fund accounting and the tax code as it relates to ventures capital funds and SPVs (e.g. you are always up-to-date on recent changes in the tax code)
  • An ability to “go deep” on new subjects and quickly become an expert on complex/technical problem sets where others might stop at a surface level understanding
  • Experience working with software tools and appreciation for using software to automate repeatable tasks at scale
  • A comfort working in low-leverage environments and an ability to identify problems and create structure to solve them at scale (i.e. you solve problems for the team, not yourself)

We are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to providing a positive interview experience for every candidate. If accommodations due to a disability or medical condition are needed, connect with us via email at [email protected]. As a company, we value fairness, helpfulness, transparency, leadership and build our teams around these values.
