Job Summary:

As part of the agile IT team, the Junior Systems Administrator initiates and accepts inbound support requests, coordinates and troubleshoots the Chef computer system infrastructure (which includes cloud services, SaaS applications, and employee laptops) then escalates issues to other teammates, implements solutions and also documents solutions to problems. Chef adheres to Lean and DevOps process methodologies, and this role will work closely with other IT members, using those processes, to perform all functions and responsibilities in making the production IT environment stable and scalable. We're looking for someone who will be motivated and passionate, capable of working with sufficient guidance to resolve demanding tasks while working with internal customers.

Responsibilities:

Works effectively in a Lean/DevOps environment to take helpdesk requests, monitor, log, resolve, and escalate any issues with Chef’s IT Services, Windows and OS X laptops, and Windows/Linux servers.

Follows the established IT procedures to ensure timely resolution or escalation of issues. The Junior Systems Administrator distinguishes themselves by displaying technical curiosity, initiative and a desire to continually grow and improve the end-user experience.

Chef’s strong DevOps approach requires this role to interact with Engineering and other departments in order to resolve sometimes complex projects. Chef is an open environment where helping each other is a standard.

Assists with or initiates projects with a degree of autonomy. You will be free to resolve problems as you see fit. However, team members are always available for assistance and guidance to help resolve issues - you will not be expected to handle everything on your own.

Prioritizes Helpdesk work and daily planned work to achieve the highest degree of success through Kanban processes. Interacts with various internal teams and address documentation and workflow needs. Co-manages a queue of support tickets and troubleshoots problems as they arise.

Continually looks for opportunities to develop solutions through automation. Helps maintain the production and non-production environments, and makes continuous improvements to reliability, security, serviceability, and availability.

Receives Mentorship from other System Administrators and fosters a learning environment for self-improvement; is a lifelong learner.

Job Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Intellectual curiosity, a life-long learner.
  • Experience troubleshooting, managing and/or repairing Windows, and/or OS X based devices. Able to troubleshoot network connectivity, logon, application installation and usage issues.
  • You are vaguely aware of or have exposure to an operating system called Linux and are open to exploring it.
  • Basic Cloud familiarity with Azure, AWS, and/or GCP.
  • Have some understanding of SaaS applications which may include; single sign-on, password management, audio/visual, chat, ticketing systems, wiki's, and other application types.
  • Good basic problem solving and analytical skills with desire to exercise and grow daily.
  • Have a basic understanding of supporting network based applications: IP, TCP, HTTP, DNS, FTP, and SMTP.
  • Interest in writing scripts/code in an administrative language (e.g PowerShell, Python, Bash, Ruby, C#) with bonus for existing knowledge in at least one.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An associate or bachelor's degree in computer science, or equivalent experience.
  • One to three (1-3) years experience in Windows/Linux/Unix based system administration.
  • Configuration Automation Experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Chef a big plus.
  • ACMT certification is a HUGE plus.
