The Commerce + Ecosystems (C+E) Commerce team is working to enable an easier experience for customers and partners to grow, as well as to buy and do business with us by delivering a dependable, safe, and secure commerce infrastructure. The Ecosystems team is committed to driving discovery and awareness of Microsoft within our ecosystem of products and services, as well as reaching technical communities around the globe.

As part of the Ecosystems business within C+E, the Skilling organization skills the workforce of today and tomorrow by providing a single, coherent, online platform that enables Microsoft to bring content and experience to customers to enable them to learn, grow, and adopt Microsoft technology. Learners can gain new skills, solve problems, and connect with other technologists through access to technical documentation, training, Q&A. They can also discover architectural guidance, frameworks, and code samples to help them make the most of Microsoft technology. We make these resources available through 1st party in-product integrations, 3rd party experiences, at events and through channels.

We're looking for a Principal Content Manager to manage a diverse team of deeply technical writers who publish technical content for Azure developers on https://learn.microsoft.com. The services that the team writes about include Azure App Service, Azure Functions, Azure Container Apps, Azure App Configuration, API Management, Azure Cache for Redis, and many more.

You will be a valued member of the leadership team for developer content and will be expected to help the team of managers (your peers) to improve our processes, to take the lead on projects that will get us closer to our goals, and to support each other's growth. Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and prioritization of an 8-10 member team to ensure the team delivers content to customers on time and with high quality.
  • Use customer feedback and interactions to understand customer needs and to help prioritize your team's work.
  • Identify and resolve issues relating to documentation project schedules, resource availability, documentation structure, documentation design, and content quality.
  • Coach your team of writers to help them know what success looks like for their role, help them have impact, and help them learn and grow in their careers.
  • Create an inclusive work environment across a geographically dispersed team where every employee can effectively communicate, engage, and be a contributing member to the team.
  • Encourage your team to embrace AI by
  • teaching developers how to use AI in their applications,
  • ensuring that content about our Azure services is structured appropriately, is up to date, and is accurate so that it shows up well in Microsoft Copilot responses, and
  • using, testing, and providing feedback on internal tools that use AI.
  • Align your work and your team's work to company and organization priorities and objectives. Use established systems and processes to ensure quality and efficiency.
  • Build relationships with Azure engineering stakeholders for the products about which your team writes. Establish a regular cadence of meetings to share our content business vision and content performance and to learn about their upcoming priorities. Advocate for engineering team contributions to content.
  • Contribute to the initiatives and projects of the larger Skilling organization.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years experience in writing, content design, information technology (IT), or coding/programming
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years people management experience in any of the following disciplines: content, customer support, program management, or technical training.
  • 7+ years working in the software industry in a capacity that involves writing for a highly technical audience, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership skills - providing clarity for your team about the strategy and goals, generating energy and excitement for the work ahead, and driving the team to be accountable for delivering results.
  • Planning skills - establishing priorities, setting timelines, communicating progress and changes, and understanding trade-offs
  • Demonstrated project management including Agile methodologies
  • Experience working with developers, as teammates, customers, stakeholders, or similar.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure or other cloud services
  • Experience working with Git, GitHub as a content management system, and Markdown.

Technical Writing M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
