Role Description

The Dropbox security team is responsible for securing data at a massive scale. Over half a billion users and 300,000 teams trust us to keep their private data safe. As such, Dropbox is investing in a new Privacy Engineering function to decrease complexity and cost while improving speed and completeness of Privacy programs to allow us to comply with laws such as GDPR and become a leader in the area.

This team is entirely new. We are looking for an EM that can iteratively deliver against the goals and show results consistently, building a backbone within the organization. With the backbone in place, the EM can expand the space or take on additional responsibilities (owning other teams). We are looking for a builder! Someone that can grow a new space into something bigger.

The ideal candidate must have a Software engineering background and solid experience leading a software engineering team. Additionally, they must be familiar with Privacy laws.

  • You will lead and grow the Privacy Engineering team
  • You will be responsible for taking a new team, set the vision and grow it into something bigger.
  • You will lead the team to stay ahead of new Privacy laws and requirements.
  • You will drive the automation of subject deletion and access requests.
  • You will lead a team to build capabilities to suppress third-party sharing and manage consent.
  • You will drive building self-service privacy tools for Dropbox customers.
  • You will aim to improve transparency in our personal data processing.
  • You will have to communicate status and report on business goals to the leadership team.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field involving coding (e.g., physics or mathematics), or equivalent technical experience
  • 10+ years of total software engineering experience, including 2+ years with direct management responsibilities.
  • Experience setting a vision and iteratively deliver progress to it.
  • Experience with distributed systems or backend infrastructure at scale
  • Experience as a software developer
  • Strong on analytical capabilities to optimize solutions in a space with a lot of complex moving pieces, variables and constraints
  • Ability to mentor team members on having the highest possible impact

Additional Perks + Benefits

In order to be successful in our Virtual First environment we needed to make changes that would allow employees to have more control over both where and how they work. Therefore, we embrace “non-linear workdays” with defined core collaboration hours that overlap across time zones. Beyond that, we encourage employees to design their own schedules to balance collaboration with needs for individual focus. We’ve also moved from “all day syncs” to an “async by default” culture, reserving meetings for discussion, debate, and decision-making, and handling all other work in our deep focus hours.
