Glowforge is a beautiful device that sits on your desk. It uses a laser to carve and engrave products from raw materials like wood, leather, acrylic – even cardboard.

If you haven’t already, check out our video on glowforge.com. While you’re there, you’ll see something amazing: this project is one of the most funded preorder campaigns of all time. People love what we’re creating and can’t wait to get it. And we’re still tiny!

That’s where you come in. You’ll be the right hand of our CEO and the advisor to the executive team.

Why we need you

We are a small company with an amazing future ahead. Even as we grow our team, every one of us is leveraged tenfold.

Making this work requires two, often contradictory things: creating the right process around how our business runs, and trying creative, high-risk ideas that can move the company forward.

You’ll be the key to both.

You’re going to help us outmaneuver companies a dozen times our size and build Glowforge into a company that will be admired for years to come. You’re the key to our team’s effectiveness as we grow and change, and our company won’t succeed without you.

Here’s what you’ll be doing

The first half of the job is being the strategic advisor to the executive team. You’ll lead meetings and off-sites, you’ll investigate and implement processes that make us more effective, like OKRs and budgeting processes.

The second half is being the right hand to our CEO. You’ll work with him to explore new technologies, investigate new strategic directions, and try new ways of operating.

You’ll also be responsible for hiring and managing an executive assistant to support the leadership team.

In short, you’ll be:

  • Diving deep into exploratory tasks like testing new technologies out that make the company more effective and investigating interesting innovations in our space
  • Organizing managing key strategic partners that work with the CEO, for example our patent attorneys and safety advisors
  • Coordinating and acting as facilitator for strategic meetings including board meetings, executive offsites, and other leadership events
  • Being “ghost Dan” from time to time by drafting emails, blog posts, and other written materials
  • Hiring and managing an executive assistant to support the leadership team

You need these qualifications

  • You have a deep technology background and are comfortable diving deep into new, advanced technologies.
  • You have wonderful interpersonal skills and are used to working with distracted executives to create alignment and amazing results.
  • You have previous experience hiring and managing staff, and love the art and science of management.
  • You have years of experience at both startups and more mature organizations.
  • You are an outstanding writer who is comfortable with styles ranging from formal to funny.
  • You have a four year degree and at least five years of related experience.
  • Please be sure to tell us about these last two things in your cover letter!

It would be nice if…

  • You have been a part of a high-growth startup
  • You’ve previously been a part of a company’s executive leadership team
  • You are passionate about making things – sewing, woodworking, scrapbooking, or anything else.

Please send us your resume, and – more importantly – a cover letter that tells us about your interest in this role. If you have any supplementary information, like an online portfolio, please share that with us too. This is a full-time role in Seattle, and we are happy to help new employees relocate to this beautiful city.

One more, very important thing: we are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We’re strongly committed to providing equal employment opportunity for all employees and all applicants for employment. For us, this is the only acceptable way to do business.
