The Director Business Continuity is a new position at Groupon that requires leadership, analytics and organizational development capabilities all rolled into one. This position is based in our Chicago headquarters reporting to our VP, Chief Procurement Officer.

 

The primary aspect of the role includes executing and managing key Business Continuity Program (BCP) initiatives, primarily by maintaining all aspects of the Governance, Reporting, Audit and Compliance process. The Director, Business Continuity & Process Improvement will lead the implementation and management of the BCP Program at Groupon coordinating Emergency Response, Crisis Management, IT Disaster Recovery (DR) and Business Continuity. The Director will provide overall leadership for the Program and work closely with Business Unit Managers and business functions including Legal, IT, Information Security, Facilities, Human Resources, Communications, Security, Global Operations and Post-deal Logistics. The Director will plan, conduct, and debrief regular mock-disaster exercises to test the adequacy of existing plans and strategies, updating procedures and plans regularly. The Director will build strong relationships across the company and secure organizational commitment for continued strategic and tactical support for the Program.

 

This role will also leverage the deep understanding of our processes to help make recommendations to Senior Leadership on how to automate, provide global coverage and improve processes on key Business Continuity areas for Local (sales process) and Goods (Post-deal logistics).

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and operationalize the BCP components

  • Engage with different lines of business and corporate functions across Groupon to prioritize and conduct continuity risk assessments and impact analyses, facilitate risk mitigation plans, and drive the development of robust business recovery and continuity plans

  • Provide leadership and subject-matter expertise on crisis management planning and execution and develop and maintain highly functional Emergency Response, Crisis Management, and Business Continuity plans

  • Collaborate with senior IT Leads to facilitate the development and maintenance of IT DR Plans

  • Develop comprehensive and integrated exercises to test and update the plans regularly

  • Establish sound governance processes, policies, procedures, and best practices to keep all BCP components aligned, current, relevant, actionable, and auditable

  • Work with the Legal and Finance to ensure Business Continuity risks are sufficiently identified, assessed, mitigated, and reported

  • Monitor emerging BCP practices and technology tools for potential adoption at Groupon

  • Provide regular reports, dashboards, and scorecards on the operational status of the Program to the BCP Steering Committee and a variety of stakeholders

  • Manage external resources related to BCP and Process Improvement

  • Identify and escalate key Program risks to the BCP Steering

  • Function as a resource to senior executives and to the Company as it relates to: testing, monitoring and service assurance for Groupon’s global business continuity efforts.

  • Recommend the development and deployment of new services and technology to improve business critical processes

  • Establish strong relationships with all key stakeholders globally.  Big picture thinker.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Undergraduate degree required with 10+ years of progressive experience in BCP in a global tech company.   Master’s degree in Business or Technology preferred.

  • Moderate understanding of regulatory requirements for technology companies in both US and Europe

  • Exceptional project management and reporting skills. Strong proficiency with project management tools (i.e., Microsoft Project, Visio, PowerPoint)

  • Expert at summarizing, packaging, and presenting data to assist executive management in assessing options and decision making

  • Superior analytical and problem solving skills, with demonstrated intellectual and analytical rigor

  • Strong innovative and creative solution development and deployment capability

  • Possess a demonstrated sense of urgency with the ability to perform well under significant enterprise-wide pressure

  • Ability to structure, manage, and coordinate complex cross-organization projects and processes with multiple stakeholders

  • Ability to handle projects with multiple work streams, with proven leadership success over a wide variety of business problems

  • Team oriented, collaborative, diplomatic, and flexible, with excellent presentation skills, including strong oral and writing capabilities

  • Work with limited direction, usually within a complex and often ambiguous environment, to drive rigorous, fact-based recommendations to senior management, other executive, functional, or regional management while supporting syndication with stakeholders across the organization

  • Prefer someone with a LEAN Six Sigma green or black belt
