Prior to working at Clean Power Research, an afterschool activity for one of Lucie Gautier’s kids meant a logistical nightmare.

“I remember when attending my children’s school events at 4:30 p.m. felt like an impossible juggling act,” Gautier said. “But everything changed when I joined Clean Power Research.”

Today, Gautier is one of the greentech company’s hundred employees who take advantage of a hybrid work policy that allows employees to work however they work best.

“Personally, attending my children’s activities and reconnecting from home to complete work has been invaluable,” Gautier added. “This flexibility allows me to be present for my family while excelling in my career.”

In practice, this means that Gautier coordinates with her supervisor to decide which days of the week are best for her to come into the office, but she has the freedom to adjust as needed.

Now I can work from home when necessary, attend my kids’ events and still complete my work,” Gautier said. “It’s been a game-changer for balancing my professional and personal life.”

Built In spoke with Gautier about what makes the flexible work schedule at Clean Power Research unique and how it plays a big role in shaping the company culture.

What does flexibility in the workplace look like for you?

As a senior technical recruiter at Clean Power Research for over two years, workplace flexibility has been transformative. With three young children and a husband who frequently travels, the ability to work from home or in a hybrid model has been valuable.

CPR’s adaptable working hours and remote options have enabled me to balance my professional and personal life effectively. This arrangement benefits both me and the candidates I interact with, showcasing CPR’s commitment to a healthy work-life balance, which is crucial for many job seekers today.

CPR’s work policies empower employees to manage their responsibilities seamlessly. We enjoy the ability to set our own schedule while aligning with core business hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for collaboration and communication. Our remote work policy ensures everyone adheres to the same expectations, including coming into the office once a week or more, for interactions and teamwork in person. At CPR, we believe flexibility, when compatible with role requirements, is key to creating a supportive and productive work environment, allowing everyone to thrive.

Why is flexibility an important element of your company’s culture?

At CPR, having a strong work-life balance is a core part of our culture, enabling employees to balance work and personal lives seamlessly. Last year’s employee survey showed 87 percent of respondents praised our work-from-home and hybrid model. For many, the ability to adjust schedules for personal responsibilities has been appreciated.

At CPR, we believe our hybrid work model fosters a supportive and productive work environment. By empowering employees to manage their responsibilities effectively, we enhance job satisfaction, productivity and morale. Demonstrating flexibility in roles whenever possible highlights CPR’s dedication to employee well-being and success.

What tools or meeting structures ensure that a flexible work setup works for everyone?

To ensure our flexible work setup works for everyone, we use several tools and meeting structures. Microsoft Teams is our main platform for communication and collaboration, helping us stay connected and productive. We have various groups on Teams that align with the company’s values and culture, such as “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and “Pedalers” for biking employees, fostering community and shared purpose.

We also send a weekly newsletter called CPR Pulse — a play on the short form of our company name — to proactively share important company information, team news, product releases, big wins and conferences attended. Employees contribute items which are then compiled by our HR business partner and edited by our CEO. To maintain community and camaraderie, we organize informal happy hours, team-building activities and volunteering events. Monthly events like breakfast gatherings, potluck lunches, gingerbread house construction and soon, a healthy cooking class, enjoy great participation. Balancing this hybrid model with special in-person time has strengthened employee connections, while our practices and tools ensure remote accessibility for some events.
