Flexe’s Cultural Evolution

When describing Flexe’s work culture, Cristyann Laxamana highlights its continuous evolution at the intersection of a remote environment and authentic connection. Yolanda Upshaw maximizes that connection as an opportunity to immerse herself and her peers in the experiences of diverse communities. Dennis Lim embraces the remote nature, ensuring time away is restorative to cultivate work-life balance. With teams spread across multiple time zones, opportunities for balance both in and out of work are imperative, said Lim. “We intentionally look at ways to bring people together and share those experiences on a regular basis,” he said. “Flexe recognizes, acknowledges and celebrates all of its employees.”

Combating Bias With Learning

“I am a believer that we eliminate biases through learning,” Upshaw said of creating a culture of openness. Identifying as an African American, Upshaw savors any opportunity to immerse herself in learning about cultural nuances. “The celebrations of Juneteenth are a highlight for me,” she said, noting that engagement across the company was energizing. “The candid conversations and willingness to understand the plight of the Black community was palpable.” Upshaw added that through recurring meetings, Slack groups and more, the company is intentional about ensuring all voices are heard and recognized.

Evolution is in the air for Flexe’s remote work culture. “I would describe our culture as evolving — it’s shifting as our business grows,” Laxamana said. From weekly coffee meetups to virtual games, the team prioritizes culture-building across multiple teams and modes of work. She noted that her favorite element of team culture is the ability to connect both virtually and in person — with ample opportunities to connect with her colleagues in meaningful ways. “A strong team culture sets us up for success by making it easier to collaborate with colleagues and truly operate as a team," she said.

Our team creates opportunities for virtual and in-person connection. I enjoy connecting with my teammates to get to know each other better.
