Despite stereotypes to the contrary, engineering — and startup life in general — are necessarily social pursuits. And as one of the world’s biggest hubs for startups, tech giants and industry talent, there is always some kind of after-work hack night or networking event going on in Seattle. Here, we profile four local events that you ought to drop on your calendar for October. 

 

Top Companies Hiring

Who’s putting it on? Built In (Hey, that’s us!)

Where? AXIS Pioneer Square at 308 1st Avenue South

When? Tuesday, October 15th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

How much? Free

What’s going on? After years of bringing thriving tech companies and talented job seekers together in cities across the country, Built In is putting on our first ever Top Companies Hiring event in the Pacific Northwest! Join leaders and employees from six of the Seattle area’s most innovative tech organizations — 98point6, DreamBox Learning, PitchBook, Getty Images, Hiya and Pushpay — to learn first-hand about their technology, culture and ambitions for 2020. There’ll also be casual networking, appetizers and local brews aplenty.

New Tech Seattle

Who’s putting it on? New Tech Northwest

Where? Thinkspace Seattle at 1700 Westlake Avenue North

When? Tuesday, October 1st from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

How much? Tickets range from $7 to $25

What’s going on? New Tech Northwest’s community of developers, entrepreneurs, founders, recruiters, hackers, job seekers, investors and community leaders meets each month in the Thinkspace Seattle coworking space overlooking Lake Union for networking and company presentations. October’s presenters include Allison Rosenberg of college finding tool Posed2, Kona Farry of public transit tracker Pantograph, Mark Frischmuth of tech volunteering nonprofit DemocracyLab and Ian Bergman of Microsoft for Startups.

Developing Dynamic People Leaders

Who’s putting it on? Impact Consultancy

Where? Impact Hub Seattle at 220 2nd Avenue South

When? Tuesday, October 1st from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What’s going on? With so many startups growing so quickly in the Seattle area, many techies are being thrust into management roles for the first time. To help those organizations and budding careers continue their rise, Impact Consultancy has created an all-day boot camp designed to pair sound leadership and culture-building skills with a new manager’s technical chops. Facilitated by a pair of experienced leaders and educators, the course will center around building collaboration and openness within teams.

Open Source Community Hack Night

Who’s putting it on? Code Fellows 

Where? Code Fellows at 2901 3rd Avenue

When? Every Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

How much? Free

What’s going on? Every Tuesday, engineering academy Code Fellows hosts its free form hack night dedicated to letting developers build open-source projects at their own pace. The community always has a number of projects in its queue, which attendees can hop in and contribute to. The event is careful to provide opportunities for developers at all experience levels to work, debug and code together. Learners can find mentors, and community elders can pass on their experience to the next generation of coders.
