Pet-focused e-commerce site Chewy recently announced it will be opening its next office in Seattle.

As part of this announcement, the buzzy company revealed that it will hire “several hundred” people over the next few years. Chewy will hire primarily for roles across its technology, merchandising and product teams, which will be based out of Seattle. Dozens of these job listings are already open.

“As we continue to build a world-class organization of talented and diverse team members, we’re excited to expand Chewy’s corporate presence to the Pacific Northwest region,” a Chewy spokesperson told Built In.

The spokesperson went on to say the Seattle region was a logical choice for Chewy’s newest location “as a hub for innovation.”

“We look forward to joining this vibrant, tech-driven community and are currently hiring for a variety of technology, merchandising and product roles — built for leaders (and pet lovers) looking to help transform the pet industry,” the spokesperson continued.

Chewy says that it’s currently in the process of securing an office location, and anticipates doing so by the end of the year. But that hasn’t stopped the company from hiring several Seattle-based team members already.

This new office will be the company’s fourth location. Chewy is dual-headquartered in Boston and Dania Beach, Florida, and it also has an office in Minneapolis. Right now, Chewy’s national team consists of more than 18,000 employees.

Founded in 2011, Chewy has built an e-commerce marketplace that sells everything from pet food to toys and medicine. The site isn’t limited to just dogs and cats either, with goods for fish, birds, reptiles, horses and more.

Chewy had a stellar year in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic caused more people to turn to e-commerce marketplaces for their everyday purchases. The pandemic also gave a boost to the number of pet adoptions, and people who already owned a pet were spending more time with them due to the increase in remote work.

All of this was a recipe for success for Chewy, which reported $1.78 billion in sales in Q3 2020 — a 45 percent increase from the year before. The company now has 17.8 million active customers. The launch of Chewy’s Seattle office will help the company keep up with this soaring demand.
