Funko’s pop culture figurines are everywhere — on car dashboards, bookshelves and in enormous collections. Soon the large, square-headed characters will come to life in a video game.
On Monday, Funko announced a new partnership with 10:10 Games to develop a video game. According to a release, the first Funko video game will be an AAA title that will launch in 2023 for current and next-gen consoles as well as on PC.
Headquartered in Everett, Funko manufactures licensed figurines and memorabilia including bobbleheads, plush figures, board games and apparel. Its collectible figurines range from Marvel superheroes to cartoon characters or famous athletes. With an array of licensed characters, it is likely that many of them will be featured in Funko’s new video game.
“Creating iconic products that emotionally connect fans to their favorite fandoms is critical to each product portfolio decision,” Andrew Perlmutter, CEO of Funko, said in a statement. “By partnering with 10:10 Games and utilizing the best creators in the business, we will have the talent to deliver games that reflect Funko’s unique look and feel across its lines and varied products.”
10:10 Games is led by Jon Burton, an industry vet who has worked on several Lego video games.
Funko has also had other ventures in the digital world recently. A few months ago it entered the non-fungible token (NFT) space after it acquired majority ownership in TokenWave, the parent company of TokenHead, an NFT marketplace with over 10 million NFTS.
“Our strategy in this space is clear — bring the value-added NFT opportunity to our licensing partners to leverage our broad range of existing pop culture content across television, movies, sports, music, anime, video games and comic books,” Brian Mariotti, Funko’s chief creative officer, said in a statement about the company’s venture into NFTs. “Our amazing licensing partners are excited about our entry into this new digital space and we believe the diversity of our licensing portfolio sets us up for long-term success.”
