The Director of Aviation Safety will serve as a key member of the Aviation Leadership Team and will report directly to the Accountable Executive of the organization. The incumbent will have as his/her core responsibility the provision of guidance and direction for the planning, implementation and operation of the organization's safety management system (SMS). The successful candidate will have broad operational knowledge and experience in the functions of the organization, including training management, aircraft operations, air traffic management, airport and hangar operations, and aircraft maintenance. The Director of Aviation Safety will ensure compliance with the FARs, the standards applicable to Part 91 of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations, and any written conditions imposed on the company on the behalf of the FAA.
The Director of Aviation Safety will work closely with the Accountable Executive, Director of Pilot Operations, the Director of Maintenance, SMS Managers and the Corporate Compliance Officer to drive a culture of safety and promote awareness. The Director of Aviation Safety be responsible for scheduling and coordinating SMS training and continuing education seminars that promote safety and operational excellence for all employees in the organization.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Ensure compliance with standards applicable to Part 91 of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations and any other internal or external influence as required
  • Serve as a leader and advocate for safety and continuous improvement within the organization
  • Bring safety issues to the attention of management and to deliver safety information to the organization's staff, contractors and stakeholders
  • Analyze data to identify trends in hazards, events, and occurrences
  • Serve as a POC for the organization for regulatory interaction
  • Conduct safety audits, surveys, investigations, and inspections
  • Develop and maintain reporting standards to exceed regulatory requirements
  • Develop, implement, and maintain company policies, operational standards, and safety procedures
  • Participate in hazard reporting and risk mitigation reviews
  • Maintain safety records and data for analysis and review
  • Track, evaluate and manage SPIs for the organization
  • Travel up to 35% of the time (US/Canada).
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Proven experience in the Aviation environment
  • Proven experience in Safety and QA
  • Experience with SMS and SMS software
  • Must be familiar with Part 91 operating guidelines
  • Must be able to pass a drug test and background check
  • Proven ability to manage relationships and drive results
  • Strong leadership and/or management experience
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong technical and analytical skills
  • Ability to prioritize and adapt quickly
  • Well-organized, dependable, and self-sufficient

Preferred Requirements

  • Previous piloting or maintenance experience
  • Experience with aerial survey or photography flying
  • Experience with Piper aircraft
  • Manual writing experience
