The Director of Pilot Operations will serve as a key member of the Pilot Operations team and will report directly to the Accountable Executive. The incumbent will have as his/her core responsibility the oversight and management of all pilot operations staff involved in the operation of a fleet of fixed-wing, piston engine, aerial survey aircraft.
The successful candidate will ensure compliance with the FARs, the standards applicable to Part 91 of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations, any written conditions imposed on the company on the behalf of the FAA, and the guidelines set forth in both the GOM and SMS.
The Director of Pilot Operations will work directly with the Fleet Maintenance team and other Operations staff to optimize up-time and improve flight efficiencies while promoting a culture of safety.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Develop, distribute and maintain the Company's General Operations Manual (GOM) and recommend additional policies and procedures as they relate to safety and maintenance
  • Coordinate recommendations for the Safety Management System (SMS) with the Corporate Compliance Officer, Director of Aviation Safety and SMS stakeholders
  • Ensure flight operations comply with applicable FARs, other federal and state requirements, and company policies and procedures.
  • Develop standards for operational performance, personnel qualifications, and quality assurance and participate in aircrew member recruiting and selection process.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Maintenance (DOM) to review all major aircraft repairs or modifications
  • Coordinate with DOM and Lead Pilot to ensure maintenance and flight operations are fully coordinated and provide planning and execution support for training, ferry flights, and operational checks.
  • Coordinate with DOM and Lead Pilot to forecast mission requirements, aircraft availability, scheduled services, off-site deployment support, aircraft inspections, and mission skills currency.
  • Establish and adhere to flight operations reporting procedures
  • Maintain and manage the Pilot Operations budget
  • Analyze and strive to improve departmental metrics and KPIs
  • Act as a point of contact for regulatory inquiries
  • Travel up to 30% of the time (domestic)
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Strong leadership and/or management experience
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong technical and analytical skills
  • Ability to prioritize and adapt quickly
  • Well-organized, dependable, and self-sufficient
  • Proven ability to present information in a formal setting

Minimum Requirements 

  • Must hold a current CPL
  • At least 3 years of experience within the past 6 years, as pilot in command of an aircraft operated under Part 91, 121 or 135
  • Must hold a current Medical
  • 2000 hours PIC
  • 2500 hours TT
  • 500 hours ME (PIC)
  • Must be familiar with Part 91 operating guidelines
  • Previous managerial experience
  • Management experience in SMS
  • Must be able to pass a drug test and background check

Preferred Requirements 

  • Previous Director-level experience
  • Preferred piston aircraft experience
  • 5000 hours TT or greater
  • 1000 hours ME
  • CFII, MEI
  • Experience with aerial survey or photography flying
  • Manual/Documentation writing experience
