About Hook

Hook is a social music platform, backed by top-tier investors, building the next generation of music discovery, fan expression, and creator growth. We turn the songs people love into sounds they can play with — enabling fans and creators to reimagine music through intuitive, remix-friendly experiences with zero learning curve. By partnering directly with artists, labels, and rightsholders, Hook ensures music is discovered, shared, and expressed in ways that respect and reward the people behind it. At Hook, music isn’t just consumed — it’s experienced, expressed, and made personal.

Role Overview

We’re hiring an Android Engineer to lead the development of Hook’s Android app from the ground up. You will help bring our core iOS experience to Android users — while ensuring the app feels native, fast, and thoughtfully built for the platform.

This is a high-impact, 0→1 role. You’ll collaborate closely with product, design, backend, AI, and iOS engineers to define architecture, ship quickly, and iterate toward product-market fit on Android. We’re looking for someone who cares deeply about craft, performance, and user experience — especially in media-rich, social environments.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect, build, and maintain Hook’s Android application using modern Android frameworks

  • Translate product and design requirements into high-quality, scalable implementations

  • Ensure strong app performance across media playback, creation flows, and social feeds

  • Collaborate closely with backend engineers to define clean API contracts

  • Work cross-functionally with product and design to refine UX and ship iteratively

  • Establish Android engineering best practices, patterns, and code standards

  • Monitor performance, stability, and crash metrics to continuously improve quality

  • Contribute to technical decisions around architecture, tooling, and release processes

Required Skills & Experience

  • 4+ years of Android development experience

  • Strong proficiency in Kotlin and modern Android development (e.g., Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, Flow)

  • Experience architecting and shipping production Android applications

  • Deep understanding of Android app lifecycle, performance optimization, and debugging

  • Experience integrating RESTful APIs and working closely with backend systems

  • Strong product instincts and attention to UI/UX detail

  • Ability to operate independently in fast-moving, early-stage environments

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience building consumer social or media-heavy applications

  • Experience with audio/video playback, media processing, or real-time interactions

  • Familiarity with experimentation frameworks and analytics instrumentation

  • Startup experience (Seed–Series B)

  • Experience collaborating across iOS and backend teams to ensure cross-platform consistency

  • Passion for music, creators, and social expression

Why This Role Matters

Expanding to Android is critical to growing Hook’s reach and unlocking the next phase of user growth. This role will define the Android experience from day one — shaping performance, architecture, and product quality for a massive new audience. Your work will directly influence adoption, engagement, and long-term scalability.

Compensation

Competitive base salary, meaningful equity ownership, and the opportunity to help build a category-defining social music platform.

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
