About the Role

The AVP, Underwriting Manager (Southeast) is responsible for leading and developing a team of underwriters while also managing an individual book of business. This role drives profitable growth, underwriting discipline, and operational execution across both their own portfolio and the broader underwriting team.

The position partners closely with senior leadership, distribution partners, and cross-functional teams to execute underwriting strategy, maintain strong broker relationships, and support the continued scaling of the organization. The ideal candidate is a strong technical underwriter, proven people leader, and strategic thinker who thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of underwriters to achieve production and profitability goals
  • Conduct regular file reviews, coaching sessions, and performance discussions
  • Drive underwriting consistency, accountability, and execution across the team
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and training new underwriting talent
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture aligned with company values

Underwriting & Book Management

  • Manage and grow an individual book of business while maintaining profitability and underwriting discipline
  • Review, evaluate, and approve complex or large account referrals within authority
  • Maintain strong relationships with brokers and distribution partners to drive new business opportunities
  • Ensure underwriting quality, pricing adequacy, and adherence to underwriting guidelines
  • Monitor portfolio performance, rate adequacy, loss trends, and exposure management
  • Partner with actuarial, claims, and leadership teams on emerging trends and strategy
  • Maintain strong underwriting discipline while balancing growth objectives

Broker & Distribution Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale brokers and distribution partners
  • Support business development initiatives and strategic broker engagement
  • Travel as needed for broker meetings, industry events, and relationship management
  • Serve as a trusted underwriting resource for both internal and external stakeholders

Operational & Strategic Execution

  • Assist in developing underwriting guidelines, workflow improvements, and best practices
  • Support implementation of underwriting tools, technology, and operational initiatives
  • Collaborate with leadership on business planning, forecasting, and growth strategy
  • Ensure compliance with carrier guidelines, authority levels, and regulatory requirements

Requirements

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of commercial underwriting experience, preferably within E&S or specialty casualty lines
  • Prior leadership or team management experience preferred
  • Strong technical underwriting and portfolio management skills
  • Proven ability to manage and grow a profitable book of business
  • Excellent communication, decision-making, and relationship-building abilities
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills

Preferred Experience

  • Experience managing casualty, general liability, construction, habitational, hospitality, or middle market business
  • Experience working with wholesale distribution partners
  • Familiarity with underwriting technology platforms and data-driven underwriting tools
